Thanks, JJ. Keep those updates coming on your car. Even though I didn't even come close
to the roadster making it to ROG last year, it still helped me get a lot done and kept my motivation level up.

Thanks, keep me in mind if that Midwest banger dirt track gathering comes together. Sounds like it would be awesome.

    Thank you.

Same here. Really want to get it dialed in and make a few high speed passes.

Thanks, man. Forgot to get back to you on those parts. I've sold all of the stuff you were looking for in the past month or so.

Yeah that's kinda where I'm at right now. No chance in hell but I keep plugging along. I can't wait to see this in person.

Never give up until the day comes and passes. I had another event in Erie I was trying to make last year also, and even though it was so far from being done, I stayed up half the night before working on it.

Should be fun. Old outdated antiquated technology makes me smile.

Started putting together a baffled muffler kinda thing. Half of a 36 Ford driveshaft, an 8BA oil fill tube, a flathead engine mount piece and two large washers More to come tomorrow.

    Thanks, guys.

Got muffler welded on, ran it with the baffle C-clamped in. Not sure if I like the sound. May modify the baffle a bit. Still need to make a hanger for the end.

And shortened up some repro shock links.
As hard a time I had finding original tubular shock links, I couldn't bring myself to cut them.

I'll get you some pics today.

So, I've been trying to get this thing running well with little success. The idle was erratic, but I kind of expected that as there is some slop at the throttle shaft on the Winfield carb. It was also running rich. Pulled the plugs and they were black and sooty. So I pulled the intake and carb this morning and oil/gas mix ran out of the intake ports as soon as the intake came off.

    Any thoughts? 1373381924717.jpg

  14. Not sure where the oil could be coming from, especially on a fresh engine.

What's your float level look like? How many 'clicks' do you have the idle needle open from gently seated?

Float level looks good, no fuel running out while idling, just below plug. The idle screw didn't click, only the intermediate and high needles click. I had the idle screw out 3/4 turn, but I've tried everything from 1/4 turn out all the way to 2 turns out.

Trying to get the idle below 1000 is nearly impossible. It just wants to stall.

More info- modern stock sized valves, .080 overbore, .330 Stipe cam, 6:1 Winfield cast iron head, been milled at least once. Mallory cast iron single point distributor rebuilt by Jim Linder, B fuel pump.

When revving sitting still, would put black smoke out exhaust with high needle open more than 4 clicks. Tried with pump needle closed, and open in 1/8 turn increments.

  16. Have you rebuilt or taken the carb apart? The idle & pump tubes were swapped in mine when I tore it down.

Also wondering about your fuel pressure...could be that the pump is pumping too much fuel. Winfields usually like 1.5-1.75 psi

  17. My tuning brochure says

Open idle adjustment 1/2 turn (8 notches)

Open intermediate adjustment 2 complete turns (32 notches)

Open high speed adjustment 2 1/2 turns (40 notches)

-start engine and run to normal operating temperature.

Turn the idling adjustment to the leanest setting that will give smooth steady running. If, after making this adjustment, the engine idles too fast or too slow, adjustment of the throttle stop screw will be necessary.

I did a rebuild on the Winfield, but admittedly it was just a cleaning and gasket replacement. The fuel pump shouldn't be overpowering the needle. It's just a B pump and the Winfield float and needle are not marked G, so would guess they are meant for a pump.
I just gave a 97 a quick rebuild and slapped it on the Winfield intake with an adapter and it idles down to 600 smoothly, revs up well and doesn't seem to be running as rich.

My initial settings on the Winfield were 1 turn out on idle, 2 out on intermediate and 2 out on high per the instructions that came with the kit from Barry Bowyer.
I can get the idle down just below 500 with the 97 on there.

Still getting an occasional pop out of the exhaust though, every few seconds at idle.
Timing may not be ideal, but I did try adjusting it when running, and changing it in either direction had a negative effect.

Ok, so since it seems to be running good with the stromberg on there, I tried adjusting the timing a little. Advancing it smoothed out the exhaust tone and got rid of the pop. Idling nicely at 500 rpm.
    Starts much better now also.

Going to have to dive deep into the Winfield carb because I want it on there.

Engine temp is a little higher with the stromberg, 170 now versus 155 before. Exhaust temp seems lower by feel though.

Well, when I took this carb apart, I put it back together the same way. Based on the P and I stamped on bottom of the bowl, my pump and idle tubes are backwards as well. Which jet, for lack of a correct term, under the pump and idle tubes is which?

Nevermind, Gary, found a thread on the HAMB you started that answered my question.

Yeah, me too. Still not convinced there is not some kind of problem with the oil there, but we will see.

    Pics for 28A.

There are just some flat head screws with nuts on the inside holding the sides on.
And I put a few spot welds on the upper piece as it seemed that's how it had been held on before.
Let me know if I can help any more.

So, I put the Winfield back on, and although it is better, it still won't idle smoothly. Going to pull it off again and check out the throttle shaft situation.

  28. Keep at it...the Winfield will be worth the effort

  29. Idle adjustment (needle) and tube are inboard (engine side), pump adjustment (needle) and tube are outboard

Thanks, I've got it all the way apart now. Need to find someone to make some throttle shaft bushings.

Any suggestion for material? bronze, oil impregnated bronze, brass?
