Projects Carter's 29 Roadster Build Thread

  1. Another thought...what size are the air bleeders? The B carb is supposed to be #28 per Bill Nielsen (Just plain Bill) mine are oversized, not sure what a BB should measure...shoot him a PM, he's got some experience setting these things up

Dang, sweet looking roadster! Always glad to see one banger powered... Hope you get the carb tuned in- I'm sure you'll figure it out soon

My air bleeders are stamped 24.
Sounds like they may be too small. I'll send Bill a message. I ordered some bronze bushings from MSC to make my throttle bushings from.

Will update with carb progress next week.

  5. #24's are larger than #28's - you may have the right ones. Mine are also stamped #24 and measure .152" ID. #28's would measure .1405"...I'm going to see how mine runs before I slip tubing in to reduce the size.

Ah, I see, I was thinking backwards on them. Mine measure about .152.

Speaking of backwards, I figured out the problem.

It's really embarrassing, actually, and once I saw it, I couldn't believe I hadn't noticed it before.
The air bleeds were in the holes for the needles and vice versa.

Put the carb back together, back on the car, and it idled down smoothly below 400 rpm.
Need to take it out for a test drive, but I'm going to get the exhaust baffle installed tonight, and test drive it tomorrow.

    Thanks, I appreciate it.

No video yet, Gary. Was out at Canfield swap meet Thursday thru Saturday.

Installed the baffle and a rear view mirror.
Coolant is out now to fix a couple leaks.

Went for first drive out of neighborhood yesterday. 55 mile round trip to beaver car show. Everything seemed good, transmission made some odd noises intermittently. I drained the 600W out of trans when I got home, it was very foamy. Switched trans and diff lube to Lucas 85W-140 today.
Swapped the post war coil out also for a pre 1939 Echlin and Echlin Bear. Have a short video from the drive to post later.

I've seen more of these damn tires pop up in the last six months than I can count. So many so, that somebody MUST be making them... or at least that's what's I think.

  19. Was good talking with you tonight Dave; roadster seems like it's running well. I'd love to hear it idle. I gotta get me a set of those "studded ground grips"!!

It's possible, but I've had these for several years, and the guy I bought them from had them for quite a few years before that. Where did ya see more of em?

Likewise Gary. I'll do another video for you tomorrow.

Hopefully they do well in the sand.

A map? I know which way north is! Haha.

I did find a similar knobby Firestone that Coker has in 6.00x16 and 6.50x16.

It is not quite the same, though.

Car has been running good, have a couple hundred miles on it in the last couple weeks with no real problems yet. The left rear tire seemed to wobble a bit, so I was planning on changing that wheel, but decided to pull the 5.25-5.50 18's off the back in favor of some NOS Goodyear 6.00 18's. Looking for a little more speed up top.

Here's the passenger side with the 6.00 18 on there.

    One from the rear.

And a comparison of the 5.25-5.50 18 on the driver's side.

  29. Drooling! Those Goodyear All-Weathers are my favorite tread pattern of all time!

Nice work...I've got a package to send to you tomorrow - will 'fit' what you're doing real well!

    Thanks, Gary. I appreciate it.

I really like that tread pattern also. I think Lucas sells them new in 16", or at least they did.

    EDIT: 16", 19", and 21"
