I work for Casey's General Stores in the construction department for starters. While at work today our archivist and resident awesome, slightly crazy but highly intelligent, long winded guy, Merle. Came by knowing that I and another coworker were car guys, and brought back this photo and description from years ago about a car club in Asbury, IA. The picture has been used in recent TV commercials for Casey's and someone had asked for more info on the cars and people pictured. The description I've included is the only info Merle has and he just thought he'd share. I'm wondering if anyone on here might know or recognise any of these cars/people. Just out of my own curiosity. There are a couple early Ford's, an early 50's Olds and a similar Ford (I think that's what it it) and an El Camino. To me they look like 60's mild custom style cars but I'm not exactly sure there. The description reads "Casey's Coffee Clubbers from Asbury, IA. Show off their cruise cars while they enjoy a cup of Casey's Coffee + some conversation." This is the only pic I have, can you guys help me out? If I know Merle car guy or not he'd go crazy for some more info for his archives. I tried to get close ups of each car but it's an old photo and it's already grainy from being blown up a bit. Sorry if the Camino is too new. It's like the hot girls ugly friend to me personally but if it helps.
no help....but i go to a Casey's by me just about every morning for coffee. the manager is usually crabby , the gay guy sometimes gives me the coffee for free. i'm drinking their coffee right now
Green coupe has been at Torquefest. The guys name escapes me at the moment. Coolstuff aka John Wells can get you hooked up with him and probably fill in the blanks.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/testsite/community/index.php?threads/hello-from-dubuque-ia.596832/ Here is the guy, Noel Mauer, still lives in Asbury. http://www.encyclopediadubuque.org/index.php?***le=MAUER,_Noel
As a side note, I can remember riding over to that Casey's from the BMX track a couple of blocks over. Long gone now
All this sounds like too good of a chance for a side trip on Torquefest weekend. Ya think that Casey's would have enough coffee to go around? Roger
Think you found the roadster too ... albeit with a red repaint and tire change. (motor stacks still there) This green coupe has been on Barry Meguiar's show recently ... and a few other little shows ... but you midwesters have seen it daily for fifty some years. Video on the bottom. Pretty cool Justabeater37 !! https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Pm3CkVriJD4
If I remember correct that is the Willis' roadster in the Slo Pokes picture. If so, maybe one of the fellas in the Casey's picture is Bob or Joe.
I don't remember it this year but i remember one similar last year that had green plexigl*** inserts in a hood that's not shown in the video. Could that be the same one?
This is awesome guys. I think I might try and contact the slow pokes and see if they might have more info. The hunt is pretty fun.
I did. I m friends with him on FB so I messaged him there. He was going to p*** on my info and hopefully he'll call me back.
Since we don't have a date or anything on the photo I've been trying to narrow down when the photo could have been taken. As far as I can tell from the background cars the van looks like a late 70's early 80's and you can't see much of it but the car looks like a mid 80's Monte Carlo SS. Anybody agree or disagree there were trying to narrow down when the picture would showed up in our company newsletter, so we car find said newsletter.
Haven't heard anything yet. John Wells said he would p*** on my info thinking that would happen at the retro rewind this upcoming weekend.
Bob Willis (one of the Slo Pokes founders is in the center with the green '50 Olds) Dennis Kitchen is next to Bob with the '55-56 Ford. Sadly, both Bob and Dennis are no longer with us. Great guys. The red roadster has not been seen in a very long time. It is not the Willis roadster. IIRC it has an early Hemi in it. I think the owner is John Miller. He has/had a body shop. I should know the guy with the El Camino but I don't. Blue Iowa plates stopped in 1996/97. That Casey's is long gone. A new one is in the same general area.
Yep. Way to jar the memory Verno. I thought that was Denny Kitchen. Sure does look like John Miller next to his roadster. 6x2 if I recall only running on 2 carbs. It's been a long time since I have seen it as well. But then its been over 20 years since I run around with any of those fellas.
Thanks for the reply and info Verno. I had started to think this one was going to stay dead ended. I'd love to contact John Miller, do you guys know if he's still in the area.
