i know there are some guys that are not big fans of the cast iron powerglide trannys but i need to know what kind of fluid should be ran in it. this is the original trans in my dads 57 hard top so it has been thru hell in the mid 70's but seems to slip real bad when shifting into 2nd. thanks in advance, jason.

Dexron fluid replaced type A, which was specified back then for the PG.

There are several things that could be wrong with it...one is the valve body, which supports the direct drum, when the bushing wears out the sealing rings go bad and it won't get pressure to the high gear clutch. Hopefully it's not that...but that is what happened to the only cast iron PG I ever had to fix.

I pulled one of those out of a '57 I owned in the 80's. I think that trans weighed more than chevy sprint my sister was driving back then.
