Is there a way to fix a 1/4"-3/8" hole in a cast iron ramhorn exhaust manifold? Just need a fix til I can get another pair.
Is it a hole ? do you need to p*** a bolt through it ? If it’s just a hole you can braze it or even jb weld works ok sometimes
I have to find another set, that will clear my steering, so this will be temporary. Nobody will see it anyways...
I have tig welded with bronze filler rod with great success. Just need to thoroughly clean the area and pre heat before welding. Vic
Why....never seen a hole before? Didn't say it was "punched" in it. These manifolds are really old, so it's just worn in.
People are trying to help. If it's a hole with no crack, drill it out - tap it- throw a plug in it. If it's a hole with a crack, drill the ends, drill and tap, put a plug in it, this will likely open up the crack - so braze or weld up the crack and the plug. If it needs welded or brazed, depends on what equipment you have available Anthony Myrick covered the options.
Easy partner....It's a simple question. 1/4" hole in cast iron exhaust manifold. Not, misfire in my LS2....lol!!
Seen lots of holes, with lots of different shapes, sizes, causes, locations and so on, and this means different methods are suitable for fixing the different kinds of holes. It's like when people ask how to remove a broken bolt, there are countless ways to do it but most of them will be less than ideal and some quite unsuitable. You have to choose the right method for the cir***stances, if those are unknown it becomes impossible to make an informed choice. Sometimes you heat it red hot with the torch, sometimes plastic parts in the area makes that a really bad idea...
Never "tapped" a hole? . Pipe tap and pipe plug Bob See chart in link for proper size https://www.alliedmachine.com/Onlin...rts/Unified-National/TDC-Unified-National.pdf
The obvious fix would be braising it...but it's temporary, so just putting a bolt in it is probably the easiest fix. And, it's NOT like removing a broken bolt. That takes more skill and planning. This is more like a zip tie on your carb linkage, hahaha
It's the cast iron that through me off. I've tapped a few holes in my time......but let's keep this clean!
What part of the world are you in? I've got a pair from old mangy, a 327. I'm not using them and if you pick them up, they're free. I'm not shipping them however... call me lazy!
What are you looking for Bob, I might have something. Center dump 2" or 2.5", angled truck or 265 style? If nothing else, I used some manifold putty on some headers that lasted pretty well.
They're angle dump. The hole is right next to the top bolt. P*** side is good... Driver side is haggered from grinding on it to clear the steering. (not by me!)Probably why it burned a hole .
I'll look in the shed tonight, but I think I only have the straight center dump and some 265s. Which way is the dump facing forward or backwards? Also the LB T club swap it this Sat. if I don't have one and you still need one. https://offerup.com/item/detail/034...fcb0205319d2?q=chevy+exhaust+manifold&cid=5.9 https://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/pts/d/sun-valley-chevy-ram-horn-angle-dump/7500770247.html
I'll look tonight, I'm going to try to make it to Lyons that Sat after the swapmeet. If space is at a premium and total performance isn't needed might go with some 265 manifolds....but then exhaust pipe work is needed.
I welded a crack and hole in the manifold of my 8n tractor. Used my flux core mig. Even welded the flange up and ground it back flat where it had leaked and cut the flange. Didn’t do anything special, just welded a little then let it air cool, then welded some more. Been on there a couple of years now, still no leaks or new cracks. YMMV
