I've been working on this off and on since last spring. I finally got the General on the road and to me the carbs are too high to put any kind of hood on. If I bring the carbs down I may be able to make some kind of hood even if there are some carb tops showing.
I started by making patterns out of MDF and scraps of wood from pallets. I ended up with a design I liked so I sealed it with epoxy then a coat of clear. Next I made a plug for the core..... ( the center of the casting , the hollow part) next I pulled a fiberglass mold off it and made a core out of sand and epoxy (not shown) . Put it all into the sandbox and poured all my melted down irrigation fittings , lawnmower decks as well as a few old pistons for good measure. I pulled it out of the sand

Notice that there is a name on it , I went with my family name as it may be the only thing that will live on after I'm gone. My cousin and I are the only males left on this branch of the tree and he has girls and I may not get any grandchildren.
Anyway , I am also working on another QC , it also has my trademark.

Great idea. Lousy subject line. No one will be able to search for your thread on home casting parts.

Not too many fellas ramming up intake manifolds in their garage these days.

    Nice work.

Very nice! I have designed castings at work, but have never attempted to do the tooling and pour them at home. That is too cool!

Fifty years from now, someone will be on the internet (or whatever replaced it) saying, "Does anyone have any information on BELL speed equipment?".

Fantastic! And you make it look so simple. (You must be a pattern maker by trade!) I'll be looking for your next one. Thanks.

Thanks for the generous kind words . I am a retired fire Captain that is basically self taught in machining , welding , paint and body and woodworking. I did go to trade school and completed an apprenticeship in auto mechanics but got out of that to join the fire service.
I guess my superpower is I don't know what I can't do . I'll try anything if it interests me.

    I know very little.
    Very interesting, though.
    Please allow a dumb question.
I think I see that the waffle pattern is reproduced on the inside. Curious about the purpose for that.
    Thank you.
    Nice work.

From what I understand the waffles increase the surface area to help vaporize any liquid fuel in the manifold and also create some tubulance to assist in mixing the fuel/ air. I have made a channel on the bottom of the manifold so it can be heated with coolant from the thermostat bypass to also help in vaporization.

Hand made speed parts. It doesn't get any more traditional than that!

  26. That is really cool.

The first thing that jumped into my head when I read the title was "I hope he's careful, I understand some mower decks are actually magnesium".
