casting numbers

    i have a chevy 235 six and i had the numbers ran by some guy and he said it could be a late '54 or early '55 motor. i was wondering if anyone would know where i can look it up or if anyone out there would know themselves. the number is 0083024f56z any help would be great. thanks to all out there who can help.

    It's a 1956 235" engine.

    thank you tagman for your help, where is a place i can look up to find aome history about this engine? i would like to find out a bit more of the origin.

    If you look by the starter, you should find a couple casting numbers, one will be the block casting number, the other (which starts with a letter) will be the casting date code. That code will tell you what day the block was cast. Other than that, there isn't much you can find out about it without taking it apart to see what work might have been done to it. And then, there isn't much you can find out as far as history, other than the date codes on the bearings which will tell you about when it was last overhauled.
