Cell Phone Ban In Effect in Pa

New law goes in effect today. 10/10/07. It is illegal to use a handheld moble telephone while operating any moving vehicle while on a highway in Pa. The fine is $50.00. Exceptions are Hand's free telephones, That can engage in a call without the use of either hand.
Be careful when in Pa.

 

Good idea, I almost hit a motorcycle years ago while talking on the phone, I swerved at the last second and hit a church van full of kids instead. Nobody was hurt, but it could have been BAD either way.

 

COOL! Bring it to California. I had to deal with at least six dipshits on their phones, not paying attention, on the way to work this morning.

It has been law here in Denmark for some time and I really like it. Phone calls and driving don't mix.

I mean come on, you can't enjoy your hot rod while on the cell!

 

Can't wait for that to happen here, cell phones seem to be worst distraction, a driver can have, I hate them.

So the cops dont see a phone to their head.
they will begin texting while driving.

Also, are there any studies or anything that this even works? people on phones drive like sh!t because they are distracted, not because they have a piece of plastic glued to their ear. will hands free change a dang thing, when the driver is thinking/talking about that b!tch margie at the office, or the way the hairdresser fukkered up her hair or why is the husband always watching sports during football season? I don't think hands free cell use will help anything...only an opinion.

now on to ohio and michigan and enforce it..my buddy and I almost got nailed this past weekend by some chick talkin on her dam phone and not even stopping when she pulled out of a side street right on top of us..she had to be both dumb and blind not to see my friggen roadmaster is the size of a friggen land yaht for cyin out loud..you know that this bitch had the audacity to pull up on my ass and proceed to chew my ass out because i interupted her dam phone call! stupid shit! and im sure the cops would have liked to see that she made two traffic infractions..one not stopping at a stop sign the other TALKING on her shitty PHONE!

 

I often wondered myself why people drift off into lala land when they put a phone up to their ear. Back in the day of CB radio fame, I don't recall a bunch of people being distracted because they had a microphone in their hands.

 

If you guys think using a "Hands Free" cell phone is going to make a difference you better think again, I already see people txting when driving, the bottom line is people need to pay attention when driving !

its been the law over here for a while now and i`m pretty sure the fine is £1000 ($2000)...if caught....there must be a lot of people with money to give away though cause it hasn`t seemed to stop anyone...

A law is useless without people around to enforce it. My morning commute in the bay is full of bad drivers on cell phones, texting, makeup, illegally using the HOV lane, etc. There are never any cops around to enforce it.

And, besides, those guys with the Blue Tooth BORG ear thing look like such douche bags.

 

That ban/ law has been in NY for least a year now, rarely enforced. Now they are talking about a ban on text messaging while driving after a group of kids got killed this summer. Too many drivers seem to pay attention too everything but driving.

 

My 17 year old niece got pulled over on a suspicion of DUI a couple of months ago. Turns out she wasn't drinking... she was texting to a friend and crossed over the centerline three times in 6 blocks. The police officer gave her a warning ticket for failing to devote full time and attention to driving.

I used to think we needed to raise the legal driving age to 18, now I am thinking 21 and no electronic handheld devices aloowed in the car. And maybe 25 for girls... J/K

 

Don't get too excited...it's been the law in the District of Columbia for a few years. No highways, no turnpikes, just city streets..... no enforcement. It's a common subject on the evening news with all the Virginia and Maryland commuters. Every other driver has a cell phone held up to their ear. Pedestrians beware.

If they confiscated the phone without letting them copy their files??...maybe....50 bucks?? yeah right.

As far as I can tell, the ban in NJ has had zero effect...if you stand and watch cars going by, easily a third have phones visibly held to ears. I think the texting happens below line of sight, so who knows...
A great many people actually BELIEVE that they can competently handle 2 or 3 tasks simultaneously; they may not be able to chew gum and walk at the same time, but they KNOW they can text, eat a super whopper, and drive with no prob. Reality checks don'r register on them...multitasking is gonna rot everything.
Somebody QUICK invent a brakelight switch that will text "STOP!!!" to the car behind!!

 

What's more shocking is how many people think TEXTING while driving is okay. Glad to hear PA has passed this law... here in Ontario the law is vague: anything that is a "distraction to the driver" is called into officer's discretion--which means it's usually ignored.

We found that even when participants looked directly at objects in the driving environment, they were less likely to create a durable memory of those objects if they were conversing on a cell phone. This pattern was obtained for objects of both high and low relevance, suggesting that very little semantic analysis of the objects occurs outside the restricted focus of attention. Moreover, in-vehicle conversations do not interfere with driving as much as cell-phone conversations do, because drivers are better able to synchronize the processing demands of driving with in-vehicle conversations than with cell-phone conversations. Together, these data support an inattention-blindness interpretation wherein the disruptive effects of cell-phone conversations on driving are due in large part to the diversion of attention from driving to the phone conversation. I think we should bring back CB radios with the PA speakers under the hood.

That way when some jackass is on the phone not paying attention, you can pick up the mic and say something inappropriate loud enough so that the person on the other end of that phone conversation can hear it.

This study was based on REAL data! They correlated people (well, actually, Australians) involved in actual crashes with cell phone records. No laboratories, no simulations, just real blood and wreckage in this one!

 

As a truck driver I go from upstate NY to Marcus Hook PA 3 times a week, but always have my head set on. What's the status on them ?

 

A few years back, when my Harley was my main transportation, little blue haired ladies that looked through the steering wheel was my biggest fear. Nowdays it seems it's anyone driving with their hand stuck up to an ear.

I agree with you. I see people doing all kinds of strange shit during my daily commute. I once saw a woman cutting coupons with a pair of scissors while driving.

Phones should not be allowed in cars...period.

 

i bet if there was a study done that alot of road rage and traffic incidents and full blown accidents..were probably all a part of increased cell phone use ..from the time they were invented..

 

the only benifit i see to cell phones are for emergency road side situations..other than that they need to be turned off until that vehicle comes to a stop aand the engine is turned off..
