Sorry guys, I think this is a joke.

A guy can talk on a headset, but not holding the phone to his ear??? How the F does holding a phone up cause a problem?

Gotta outlaw cheeseburgers too then. What about Big Gulps? Hey, get your hand off of the shift knob or whatever else ya got a grasp on. Bullshit.

The problem is that there are idiots out there. Those idiots are just as bad a driver when they are talking to someone in the back seat, or on the phone. They are just as stupid when they are playing with the radio buttons or juggling a combo meal.

Allowing them to hang a dumb ass plastic bluetooth thing off their ear, but not hold a plastic phone up to the other side is just plain ridiculous.

Kind of reminds me of the seatbelt law in my state that requires me to wear my belt driving my Suburban while the motorcyclist next to me is doing wheelies with no helmet on...

BS (sorry, this touched a nerve!)

I agree. It's strange how people do act differently with a cell than folks used to with a CB mike in their hand.

Just curious.. how many people here who agree that the law is a good one are "young" people (under 30.. let's say)?
Do the younger folks recognize them as dangerous things while driving or are they so used to them because they grew up with them jammed into their ear?
Not try to start anything.. just curious.

Just what we need, more laws!

Btw, 10 years of driving over 50k miles a year with a cellphone, and often using it.

    No accidents yet!

If a person is a distracted driver, it doesn't matter if it's a cell phone, a song on the radio, or a dog outside with a poofy tail. They are still going to let their attention slip.

One hand on the phone means only one on the wheel. I always drive with one hand, but there are tons of idiots who need all the help they can get. Where are you looking when you are dialing the numbers? Where are you looking when the phone is ringing and you are trying to find it?

I see the problem every single day during my one hour each way commute to and from work. I see a driver answer the phone and slow down 10-15 miles per hour in 80mph traffic all the time. I watch phone users digging for a paper and pen to take notes. It's a distraction...period.

There are people who can drive with minor distractions, but there are more who can't drive in the first place. We sure don't need them disctracted AND stupid.

You are absolutely right. So why give them on more disctration? I know that in California they are aiming for the law to cover ALL distracted driving. That includes eating or whatever. I'm all for the fuzz staying out of my business, but I also want my cars to stay in the condition they're in.

About years ago I stop for a flag man in a construction zone.
He was standing in front of my 1 ton F350 Desiel truck when I noticed a 1/2 ton chev truck coming at me from behind at about 45 miles per hour.
The Jackass was talking to his girlfreind on the cell phone when he rear ended me in her 1 hour old truck.
He hit my rear end and went under my truck pushing the engine and transmission out of her truck and under it.
the radiator was halhway to the firewall when he stoped.

When the police came every thing was explained by both parties and I asked the officer to arrest the man for reckless driving as defined by minnesota law ( driving in a negligant way as to do damage to person or properity ) The police told me it was none of my ******* business. I guess it was none of my business as my work truck was tied up for 6 weeks and her cheap priced insurance would not provide me with a truck.
My feeling on cell phones is a $500 fine and if you are in a acident talking on one 90 days in jail with a fine.

By the way the flag man thanked me for saving his life.

    Amen!

I love when they are walking through the store or something with one on. I mean, do you really not have the time to take the phone out of your pocket to answer it? You look like a fucking Trekkie.

For some reason they feel the need to project their voice like it's not a cell phone but two cans and a string, with no regard for the rest of the people around them. I like to talk louder than them. I mean, REALLY loud, and act like they're talking to me.

    Them "Hello."
    Me "HEY, WHAT'S UP!"
Them "What are you up to?"
Me "NOTHING! JUST SITTING HERE AT THE AIRPORT RIGHT NEXT TO YOU! WHY WON'T YOU LOOK AT ME?! DUDE, DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE'S A SMALL ROBOT DICK STUCK IN YOUR EAR?!"

Then I get the dirty look.

I look back like I have no idea why they'd be looking at me.

    (Big Dirty knows the look)

They pretty much always start to talk at a respectful volume.

Using a cell phone in your hot rod isn't very traditional anyway :)

When my wife drives with me in the car I've started to count the cars with drivers talking on cell phones. It usually runs between 30 and 50 %.
It is getting so bad in NJ that they are talking about raising cell phone talking from a secondary offence to a primary one.
We also observe cars around us on the highway and guess which drivers are on the phone. They are easy to spot: drifting around in the lanes, tailgating and speeds that go up and down for no apparent reason.
In town I can usually tell by the distance (or rather lack of distance!) of the drivers following me. I have a theory that cell phone talkers tend to tailgate because that is the only way they can judge how far they are from other cars. I think they have some kind of reduced peripheral vision while talking.

I need a bumper sticker that says: HANG UP AND DRIVE!

I did see one that asked:
If that phone was up your butt could you drive better?

  18. This is a worthless law. Why? No enforcement. It's been a law here in NY for a while, I use my phone while driving daily (yeah, as if most of you don't). I drive past cops, while on my phone, and they are on their phone. The law means nothing here.

So its a law, and you know its un safe .... And you continue to do it ??

Not saying i NEVER have, But i will tell you i dont do it everyday & dont make a habbit out of it or stay on for the whole ride.

Is it that hard to talk when you park ? Or when you get to your destination ?

Like i said, you will think different when you stack up yer car or some other fucker does it for you .

Ironically - I haven't observed all of these "ridiculous"cell phone drivers out there.

I have observed a bunch of people who don't know how to drive. Sometimes they are on a cellphone, sometimes they aren't. I also see a lot of people on cell phones driving just fine.

    Correlation is not causation.

Ahh yes, and I am sure YOU follow every law on the books to the letter.

Do I see mud flaps on your hotrod? Did you know it is illegal to drive a car with exposed tires without mud flaps in the state of California? When we drive in the rain, all the water thrown up from your rear tires obscures my view.

    Nice fenders, too.

I have yet (thankfully) to get a phone call that couldn't wait until I get home or to work. Or at least stopped at my destination. I mean, if my kid was on fire, I'd want to know right now, but I would be willing to bet big money that most talking drivers are talking about jack shit. It can wait. Endangering others is not your right, I don't care how much you love America, the flag and your mom.

Oh, that last sentence is gonna stir the shit pot. Oh well.

Do I talk on the phone while I'm driving? Yep, but honestly maybe 2-3 times a month. I am also honest enough admit that it is a distraction, however small.

    Funny one, There Bort .........

But do you really think i drive my car in the rain ??

I think NOT with 6 carbs & a Vertex mag hangin out there with no protection.

But then again, I guess it wouldnt matter cus if you or one of yer cell phone loving buddys were to wreck into me cus i was hard to see or here or was kickin up to much shit from my slicks .... I would either be Dead or in jail from shoving the phone down yer Wind pipe till you couldnt breath.

And tell me, If you are worried so much about Equipment Violations on a HoRod ........ What the Fuck are you doing on a Hot Rod site ?

Or are you a custom guy ? Cus if you are, & I am too .... Maybe yer car is to low and is bottoming out on the freeway making sparks like my '61 Dodge does.

Or maybe a truck guy, Like me & run no mufflers on a hopped up Pontiac V8 and is distracting for other drivers... Ohh & it chopped so maybe I should fix that cus of window hight regulations

Or maybe you have a farm truck like my Hauler '55 F~350 and its to damn slow for the expensive car drivers that need to do 95 in the middle lane & flash there lights.

Or maybe you just like to talk shit about Equipment violations to make you feel better about driving your everyday MBZ while talking on the phone & doing 95 in the middle lane flashing lights at the poor slobs not going fast enough for your $90,000.00 dollar Yuppie wagon.

Get a grip man, The next cell phone realted Death could be your wife !

Interesting how some people think it is okay for them to choose which laws they think are important to follow - but then instruct others to follow the law just because it is a law.

I don't think driving with a cell phone is dangerous, for me. I don't think you driving without mud flaps is dangerous either. They are both laws, and we are both in violation of them (and no shit you don't drive in the rain, doesn't matter to the cops).

We both pick laws that we think are unimportant and willfully choose to disregard them. We both May be penalized for that some day (the only reason I know about that mud flap law is 'cause a friend of mine got a ticket for it)

But you're an idiot if you think you can choose which to follow and someone else can't.

Btw, you talk pretty big talk for someone arguing on an internet forum.

Also, I have a turbocharged 1960 Ranchero that probably has all sorts of violations as well.

And yeah, the next cell phone related death could be my wife (except I am not married). It could also be a cheeseburger related death, a ball scratching related death, or a booger picking related death. We better outlaw all of those things as well.

  29. Guess what? I break a lot of laws, as do the vast majority of the people on this board. I just happen to admit it, unlike all the righteous people out there that say it so horrible, but yet 99% of the people I pass on a daily basis are talking along with me. What gives you the right to say that I won't feel the same way when I wreck my car, but you clearly state that you do it occasionally. So what YOUR saying is that you know it's unsafe, and yet you continue to do it. Cuz I got news for you, if it's such a horrible thing to do, you shouldn't do it ever. It's dangerous to eat and drive-you ever do that? How about listening to the radio? Don't act like I'm so stupid when you yourself admit to it.

I really dont giva shit if its a law or not ....

as you can see by my cars EQUIPMENT LAWS MEAN NUTIN TO ME.

If it was a law in CA then i would hope it would be inforced.

My gripe is I drive ALOT on So.Cal. freeways and see tons of ass hats driving way to fast while on the cell phone & NOT PAYING ATTENTION !!

I was nearly rear ended just the other day while slowing for ROAD CONSTRUCTION when i herad the tires screeching from behind.

Was some young Girl, in a NEW beamer on her cell phone doing about 70+ on the freeway in the middle lane WAY past the sign that says SLOW DOWN-ROAD CONSTRUCTION AHEAD.

So, just because YOU or I can drive while on the phone...(yea right).. Does that meen i should not think that it should be Law NOT to use a cell phone while driveing ?

I should sit back and let OTHER people that want to jabber over nuthing on the phone take my life & property into there hands?

Or how about them ? Yeah, i prolly woulda got whiplash & my "55 totaled... but what do you think woulda happened to Dumb Rich girl when she went UNDER my flatbed truck & the bed hit her about mid windshield ?

YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE, NOT THAT THE LAW WOULD BE AIMED AT YOU... EVERYONE WOULD NEED TO ABIDE OR TAKE THE CAHNCE AT A TICKET.

Just like i take a chance at many tickets when my car goes out..

And as for talking big in the forum, It aint big talk.. ask anyone who knows me, Im not one to put up with stupid shit & if someone did hit me for such a lame reason.... Then i guess we would see if i went to jail or pussed out
