I have an alternator that looks just like this although it has a serpintine belt pulley on it. Can I change it to a V-grove pulley? It looks as if the pulley is attached to the round metal piece that's behind it (please excuse my terminology). Also it's a brand new alternator & it makes a squeaking sound when I spin it. Is this normal? Thank You! Bill
Yes you can easily change the pulley . I normally use an impact and correct socket to remove and install the pulley . The impact will allow to loosen the nut without holding the hex in the center of the shaft Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I'm not a rocket scientist but I do know the serpentine water pump runs in reverse does the alternator do the same? HRP
Alt . Will charge no matter what direct it spins in . Doesn't know the difference , but that is a great point . If you are changing to vbelt maybe change water pump also to maintain , correct water flow . Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
As said, yes easy to simply swap out the pulley. As for the squeaking noise, I'd suspect it's the brushes rubbing on the stator. Normal noise that you won't eve notice once it's running.
One of my most memorable "dumb shit" episodes....changed my motor to serpentine....got alternator, brackets, water pump, etc. for backwards running. Made engine much quieter but it overheated at 20mph-45mph. At freeway speeds or idle, thing ran cool. One day, I am leaning on the core support when it dawned on me......the fan was blowing air out of the grille instead of pulling air thru the grille.......backwards wuz me AND the fan blade.
And I'll bet you slept better that night after you found the problem. Nothing puts your mind at ease like a good "AH-HA!" moment!
Dave I'm not up on the newer generation alternators, can the cooling fan be reversed? The early ones needed a cooling fan from a Corvair alternator when reversing direction. The alternator will definately know the difference when it overheats.
I bet you picked up at least a half second in the 1/4 with the fan pulling rather than pushing? .....hahaha. A good friend wiring his electric fan backwards on his drag willys, after I wired it proper I teased him that I just made his car significantly faster.
A dumbshidt came into my shop with that problem, when the 'reverse serpentine' was new. He had a fan on it that was blowing back thru the radiator. When I pointed this out, he insisted that if the fan was turned around, it would pull instead of push. I couldn't get it across to him that the rev direction had to be opposite, NOT the fan's 'front to back'... he couldn't get his head around it. I wanted to get the fan around his head! Some guys never flew model airplanes...
GM 10 and 12 si alt . are plentiful , finding a correct cooling fan is easy as finding the correct pulley you will need . I don't think there is a different cooling fan , but not sure . You can verify by going to a parts house and verify . I'm not sure but even on a reverse rotation water pump , I think alt , still runs in correct direction . Not sure I don't have any late model stuff to verify , but I'm thinkin what causes water pump backwards rotation is that it is being turned by the flat side of the belt instead of v or ribbed side of the belt . I'm sure the engine rotation has not changed . Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thank you everyone! I didn't change to a serpentine belt system I just got an alternator that came with a serpintine pulley. I read where a 12si cooled better than a 10si so I got the 12si. I just looked at a picture of a 10si next to a 12si & the fins are going the same way. So I should be ok? Thanks again! Bill
Inside of belt around the pulley indicates standard rotation and outside if the belt wrapping pulley is your sign of reverse rotation in most instances
