I own a 62 thunderbird without air. Has anyone changed out the intake gasket themselves or had a mechanic do it. I need to no total time involved in taking out the surge tank the distributor and the intake itself and putting back in the fluids also. Total time is what I am looking at. Thank You Larry
If I recall correctly, when I had my shop we charged 2.5 hours labor time for these 390 engines. a word to the wise, be sure to glue the end gaskets in with weatherstrip adhesive and let them set up for a spell, so the gasket will not squeeze out when installing the manifold. These are heavy!! ---John
Total time depends on the talent of the mechanic. Plus on older cars things can/do go wrong. A guy knowing how to do this can do it easilly in under an hour providing no major mishaps, but try finding a mechanic that is going to do it for only an hours pay is something else. A first timer that has to go back, look at a manual, check specs, not sure of what they are doing, this can easilly become a weekend job.
With older vehicles it hard to say how long? Ive worked several hours just getting the distributer out of a FE and if the oilpump rod comes up with it sometimes you have to remov the oil pan to get it back together. then sometines older intake bolts can cause problems. Like rounding off the heads or twisting off. OldWolf
