This is all great information that I can use if I ever get my 61 Vette to the front of the line in my shop.

Those conversion would be fairly ugly in the engine compartment, even though they have probably proven to be effective.

I did this ratio change when I went from power brakes to manual and simply removed the power booster and bolted the master back up. I had plenty of pedal height, and also the pedal was high enough off the floor to simply cut the pedal arm and splice in about 1.5" to give me the extra leverage to get the correct manual ratio. Car stops fantastic, and nothing else needed.

Update: I decided I was going to start by putting in the 1-1/8" wheel cylinders, along with new shoes and deglazing the drums. So I ordered the cylinders from the local O'Reilly's. When I was at the counter to pick them up I tried threading my brake hose into it to see if these cylinders had a larger thread. Well my standard brake hose threaded right in. So then I wondered if they were 1". So I asked the counter guy if he had a caliper I could use and I checked them and they were indeed 1- 1/8 " . But then when I compared, I discovered that they had a smaller bore than the existing cylinders. When I measured the existing, I found that they were 1-3/16". So that shot that plan down. Now I think I'm just going to deglaze the drums and put in the new shoes and see if that makes enough of a difference that it works for her. If not, I'll start fiddling with the brake pedal. Thanks for all the help!

If you’re keeping all your original brake parts I would suggest a Midland****ist booster. Ford cars and almost every Thunderbird had these install at the dealership ships. My father did in 1955. There were no changes to the stock factory parts and the best thing is you could pump the brakes if need be not like an inline booster on the pedal. They work fantastic with the single stock MC. No change in the pedal ratio is needed or MC.

They mounted on the left inner fender panel on the Fords. They were installed on millions of vehicles over the years mostly tow motor’s, forklifts, etc.

I know it’s not a GM normal use brake booster but only a single brake line and vacuum hose is necessary. You can read about them at Prestige Thunderbird in SantaFe Springs Ca. You may need to fabricate a bracket.

Here’s one on a 57 T-bird….ps: the mount above is “hokey” …As you can see on the 57 it’s a professional bracket made for the Fords that could be purchased at a Ford Dealership parts counter. I think the one above might be a Bendix. IMG_7091.jpeg IMG_7090.jpeg
