Hey guys, this may seem like a stupid question but how the $%## do I get the points out of my distributor to replace them? I took out the little screw but I can't figure out how to get them off that little post that the points and condenser is connected to with the wire that goes to the coil? I removed the nut on the outside of the distributor that the wire from the coil connects to but it looks like there is another one inside the plastic insulator. Anybody know what I'm talking about? Thanks, 59chev
First and foremost.....welcome to the really neat group of people who have a Chevrolet 261 engine. I am 67 yrs. old and I actually did tune-ups, valve jobs and all sorts of stuff on these motors when I worked for a little Chevrolet dealer in the 60's 70's. I have several motors, but none within 3hrs. of my computer. As I remember, you need to remove the screw holding the point plate to the distributor plate......do not remove the screw that adjusts the point plate using the slotted hole in the point plate. Now the tough part.....you need to loosen the nut on the outside of the distributor body which holds the wire to the coil. Because this captures the "spring " for the points, you often have to manipulate the spring itself to get it to release.......pull straight up on it
Thanks Tractorguy, that was the part I was having trouble with. I removed the nut on the outside of the distributor, but it looks like there is a second nut inside the plastic insulator? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
