So my right rear brake (i thought) was leaking brake fluid...wrong, its oil, and it has to be coming frmo the rear axle. So i ordered two knew axle seals, anybody have any advise how to tackle it before i go for it this weekend??
Make sure you get all the gaskets and seal. I think there are 3 gaskets between the axle, housing and brake backing plates and one oil seal that sits in the axle tube. I used silicone to glue mine all together but I'm not sure if you need to or not. Other than that, it's just four bolts and pull the axle and your in business.
The manual has a good step by step to change them out. You'll have company this week, I've got a set of newly installed seals and gaskets weeping on Rons' '56, so it's up on the hoist to check it out and replace/repair whatever the problem is. Looks like the inner flange gasket didn't seal correctly. Hmmmmmmmmm....... must not have used enough Permatex. That's what I get for trying to do a neat, clean and professional job!
so its a pretty simple thing to do then? I didnt order new gaskets...i better do that then too. iv never done anything with the axles so it will be a new experience..
