North Thompson to be specific , between Heffley Creek and Barriere.

Love that area, almost bought a place up there, there were two places I was REALLY looking at, one was north of Barriere on the west side of the highway, 80 acres that had last been homesteaded in the 20's, but no house, just a couple tumble down log barns and a log house that had long since fallen in on itself, I would have had to build. The other was 12 acres sloping south, with a mobile that had been put on a foundation and built onto, on the north side of Barriere Lakes Rd, about 18 miles east of town, on the other side of the highway from the river, man it was pretty up there. Wound up in the west Kootenays instead, winters are a little milder. Pretty happy with that too, wanted a place somewhere in the Thompson/Shuswap/Kootenays all my life, finally pulled it off... But then anywhere up there is beautiful.
First time I went to Barriere was in the early nineties, just before the big fire that went through there at that time, I REALLY liked Barriere. There were two '57 chevy wagons, one a 2 dr, parked close to a mill in a vacant lot, just a couple blocks from the highway. Always wondered if they survived the fire, but who knows?
All of south central and eastern BC is just jaw dropping, and some of the best fishing and hunting anywhere. BEAUTIFUL area. First time I went through there I was on my way up to Wells Grey, stayed two nights in Barriere, walking around town in the evening, hardly any street lights back then and so quiet, man it was nice. There isn't anywhere up there that isn't beautiful. I have 16 acres in the Kootenays, a buddy of mine has 40 just east of Falkland, I am still up around the Thompson area all the time, I usually stop at my buddies place overnight, breaks the trip up nicely and his place is beautiful too.

Ha, when you get old your mind plays tricks on you, I just looked it up, that fire was 9-10 years after I went through there. I remembered reading about it at the time and being really sad, because i really liked Barriere

It's been 21 years since the fire and it still hasn't all come back yet.
I remember those Chevys , they were parked across from the cedar mill. I wanted to stop and ask about them , but never did.

I think that cedar mill is gone now too, right? I didn't go look for the '57s when I came up to look at the 80 acres, that was in 2022, I was sure they were long gone by then, and I will be lucky to finish the cars I have before I am dead. That eighty acres was really something, but it would have taken a HELL of a lot of work, no usable buildings and hydro stopped at the property line, would have cost a fair bit just to get power lines into where I would have wanted to build. Beautiful piece of land though, it was up a gravel road on the west side the highway a bit past Little Fort. Sure was quiet in there.
