NEver met him but saw the car at the opening of American Grafiti in town , they had it parked in front of the theater. Great song and cool car
Geez I am sorry to hear this news. I think Rod & Custom did an article a number of years ago about him with pictures of the real car and how the story evolved after a comment by a band member while they were driving home from a gig at high speed. It was something like "the telephone poles were flashing by like picket fences". I think this took place in Oregon.
It took place on the Lewiston grade in ID. It was mentioned in an article about him in yesterday's Spokesman Review.
Charlie, your suffering is over, you lived the life, you touched our hearts and souls. Hot Rod Lincoln and Charlie Ryan are immortal. A hunnerd years from now, your name, not mine will be spoken.
Here's a link to Charlie's version of Hot Rod Lincoln on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MS9fk1u6kA And one with the lyrics to all the tribute songs: http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/h/hotrodrace.shtml
RIP Charlie. You've endeared yourself to hot rodders world wide and you'll be remembered for generations of car loving people everywhere. Frank
