I think the current draw test, and the cranking test, were done at different times.

What is the battery voltage when it starts just clicking? If it is 10 volts or above, the battery is probably good. If it is below, you have a battery problem.

also measure the voltage on the little wire that turns on the solenoid, usually it's purple, while trying to crank the engine.

  9. Jump the starter motor at the solenoid on the starter. If it cranks well without clicking, it ain't the starter or the battery.

To be a little clearer ... if cranking with the key gets you two revolutions then clicks yet jumping at the solenoid gets you nothing but revolutions, you can rule out the starter and the battery.

Heck, if it does spin well by jumping it, hide a start button in the car and use it as an anti-theft device :)

Trying another spare starter i had around. Then i will try a few of these other suggestions

  11. Is the current range on your meter actually working? They usually have an internal fuse of around 500mA which will pop as soon as you have forgotten to put the lead back into the "current" socket and it sees a ground and +12V. Just about every time I lent my meter out it came back with the fuse blown. If you suspect a small drain you can also put a small light bulb in series with the positive terminal, if there is a current flowing, it will light up, although dimly.

Thought i would provide an update on this post. Yesterday I decided to try a different starter I had in the garage.
The one that was on it was brand new mini-starter off ebay. When i received it it was shipped without an outer carton and it looked like it was punching through the carton and possibly had been dropped. Well sure enough it was the problem. Low and behold the old garage starter worked and no more issue. Not sure why it would only make two motor revolutions and kill the battery and not show as a draw but it did. Thanks to all who offered good advice to help me ferret out the problem. It is on its way back to ebay for a warranty refund.

Maybe it was shorting to the case when cranking. The issue didn't seem to be when the starter was at rest. I'm glad you found it. I know with rebuilt engines some guys have to boost even a new battery because everything is tight and harder to turn over.

I just did the same thing with an extra large pizza. I didn’t get one dam slice, but the dog had all he could eat. To add insult to injury when I went to order it’s replacement, they were closed!
