If you can get by with have a two or three wire alternator a super cheap alternative is to use a 3G alternator from a newer Ford. There is tons of info on the web but I will post the best couple links here. I have heard you can get these at auto wreckers for as little as $17 so that fits almost everyones budget.

They can be found on the following vehicles.
    93-99 narrow-eared non-DOHC Taurus
    94-95 V8 Mustang
    94-00 V6 Mustang
    94-97 V6 T-Bird/Cougar
    95-98 Windstar
    91-94 V6 Lincoln Continental.
The early serpentine car and truck alts on Ryan's site are interchangable but the plug and charge stud are clocked differently to fit the wiring to the bracket better. The Pivot Mount w/ 7.00” ear spacing can be swapped into:
    1987-1992 Broncos/E-Series/F-series
    1966-1995 Mustangs

Thanks for the alt sites . I have a chrome and regular alt from a Mustang that uses that gray 3 wire hook up .
My problem is my wiring right now had a generator hooked up to it ! I need to figure out how to hook newer alt up to that wiring harness and get rid of the voltage regulator . I honestly don't have the money to spend on a one wire alt right now since all my extra money went to my dog and that was over $1000 !
So I need to work with what I have some how !
It really would help if I can find a way to rewire it or if someone knows a way to wire up the alt I have till I rewire the car and swap out the dash this fall or winter .

Jim what year of Mustang is your alt from? Is it the 3,4 or 6G unit or the older 2G unit? Post a pic or some info and I will see what I can figure out for you. As long as it is an internal regulated alt you can wire it one way or another for minimal $$$$. (You could do an external regulated unit as well buy why make it complicated)

I think it's from a 1985 Mustang . The alt has the gray regulator on the back . I have a couple different ones so will have to make sure they work befor i go through all the rewire and installation . Will take to Advanced Auto to see which ones are good !

What are you upgrading from Jim? You should have what is considered a 1G or 2g but regardless they look the same as all old Ford alternators. They are not very great to begin with. I just changed the one out on my daughters 93 because they are only 60 amps or something like that. At an idle the voltage drops way down and the lights go yellow. The newer 3G units put out around 100 amps at an idle then up to 130 amps. I wouldn't bother with the 85 unit unless that is all you have.
