Projects Cheap ass 34 pick up

Still needs more welding and a polishing before paint but the fabrication is done. Need to fit up the trans mounts and crossmember then fit a set of dual 2" pipes. The wife says she wants it loud and nasty! Lol

Oh I thought he was still talking about the lady. I was blushing just reading it.

 

A lame update but an update none the less. Finally welded on the lower parts of my tailgate hinges and attached my brackets and chains. Hooks are stainless and chains will get covered with some nice used bicycle tubes.

 

A small update is better than nothing, it is all progress.

 

There has got to be something a bit nicer than old bike tubes.....stitched leather maybe?

 

You will also be happier if you dull the points on those chain hooks. Those look like flesh-rippers.

 

Hmm leather might be nice.

And if you are close enough to rip flesh on the hook you are to close already.

 

I found this....maybe not quite this fancy but a simple baseball stitched cover would look good!

 

Hmm nice, maybe to schmancy though.

Needs more of a 1950's island boy fish boat/logging camp mechanic type vibe. Maybe a chunk of upper cut out of a worn pair of Vibergs with some rough cut leather laces.

 

Actually if I can get some small diameter canvas fire hose that is what I am going to use.

 

I've been saving the Ox blood leather for my chains for years. Can't wait to stitch mine up.
Fire hose would rule!

On my '53 pickup I used nylon dog leash with no chain, too modern. I think the small woven fire hose is a good idea.

 

Single jacket forestry hose would be the right size......hard to find cotton canvas though. Most fire hose these days is synthetic.......hit up some old loggers around you there's gotta be a stash of canvas hose somewhere on the Island.

 

What size hose are you looking for. I am in Nanaimo and might be able to help you out.

 

About 1" inside? Maybe a little less. It has to fit over a 3/16" chain.

 

We might have some 1" forestry hose laying around. I will have a look in the next couple days and let you know.

Where did you get the stainless hooks? All I see for sale are just carbon steel.

 

I've seen stainless meat hooks used - they are S shaped and you can bend one side into a circle.

I made the hooks. Turned some stainless 5/16" to a tapered point and bent them to a pleasing shape.

My truck is in for paint now and I've been thinking how to avoid the paint chipping that invariable comes with and opening tailgate and chains. I could bolt the tailgate shut with polished stainless bolts but that kinda strikes me as not for me.

I like the leather idea of simpler. Baseball mitt stitching would work since I'm a baseball fan. But I was also thinking about braided leather straps? It's not like I'm ever going to carry anything in my frame-off restored truck. Something like a piece of this:
