Anyone have a source for cheap casters for things like engine stands and other equipment in the shop??
There's a guy that builds those little engine dollies in KS and he told me he knew of a co. that changed all the wheels on shopping carts. He would buy all the old ones in bulk.
Harbor Freight. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Category.taf?CategoryID=482&pricetype= . I have used them for a my welding cart and a stand for a 322 nailhead (just a short one to roll it around the garage). When I built my engine hoist, I wanted some really heavy duty ones. I got them from the local fastener store. They are big steel toe smashers .
The Harbor Freight units work just fine for engines and the like. Anything heavier than a few hundred pounds and you might consider getting a little heavier duty set.
Our local Harbor Freight store carries a large selection, 3"-14" casters. Check them out. Tool houses and home depot also a good source. Just get some that are not under rated for your load. Nothing worst than to have a wheel bearing pop out, or a caster fail when your cherry picker or engine stand is in use.
Shopping carts work for me. If you live in the "Hood" like me on the 1st and 15th there all over the place.
