Price on ebay is very attractive at about $115.00 for a 4" drop axle, but concerned about quality. http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Drop-I-Be...rod-/222530336916?vxp=mtr&hash=item33cfd77894 I don't know about this particular axle, but there's another listing on ebay for a similar axle that is said to be from Australia. I think it says it's cast rather than forged. Anybody out there bought one of these "cheap" axles and have any comments?

FWIW, I'd be using one on a very light (1600-1800#) T roadster.

    Thanks, in advance!

One of the "cheap" axles listed said cast. That's what concerned me and prompted me to ask if anyone here has seen and/or used one of the axles.

Probably cast from old cast iron sewer pipes at that price.
Probably cast in some third world country.

Reading the linked thread on the Hoffman group makes me they may be connected with the seller of the other axle I saw on ebay and was thinking of. They were located in Oregon too if I recall correctly. There was also a reference in your link about a connection to Australia, and Australia was also mentioned in their ad.

I'll probably pass on either axle but I want to do it based on some facts (known poor quality or poor after-sale service) rather than just because the price was "too low".

    Thanks

"Quality is remembered, long after price is forgotten". Don't do it ! Pay the extra dollars and buy a quality piece, especially for such a critical item. Your life, your friends or loved ones, as well as the guy coming towards you or or the one next to you depend on your good judgement. I love old cars, but don't wish to die in one.

    SoCal has a decent price on forged/dropped axles,around 250? I think.

  13. Only a fool would buy a cheap off shore cast axle,I wouldn't put one under my car. HRP

  14. This is vague information.
However, Hoffman does have a kind of sales presence here, so maybe your reference is to the fact that they sell here?
I can tell you for a fact, you will NOT get an Australian made axle for $115!!!!!

I should add that I find it laughable that anyone would even ask about the quality of a $115 axle. Seriously, the price tells you all you need to know.

Buy cheap off shore fuzzy dice instead. They are not mission critical.

I bought one and looked it over. I didn't see anything particularly "wrong" with it but I backed out of using it on my car and sold it. I went with an original 32 heavy with an Okie Joe 5 inch drop instead.

Any money in it, Mo? I mean 'profit'. What could a guy expect to get for one of them slugs? I mean, if a guy 'happened onto' one.

I just passed it on to a buddy who needed an axle and had a tight budget for what I had in it. One issue I had with it was it had 2 1/4 inch bosses and I'm using 32 thru 34 bones which have 2 inch bosses. When I called the vendor to ask about different boss sizes, I couldn't get the idiots to understand what a "perch boss" was. I'm going to stick with dealing with "car people" from now on.

I'd feel safer with a beat up 80 year old original than with one of those. That's just me though.

Pick up cans, sell something, swap something, just stay away from this junk. IF they are, indeed, from the Hoffman group of purveyors of fine bullshit, treat it like the plague.

If you are looking for premium oats, be prepared to pay the price, but those that have been through the horse are always cheaper

You are putting your own life at risk and everyone else you meet on the road at risk as well,if you install this axle. This is certainly a cast axle and they do indeed break. There have been quite a few instances of a cast axle breaking right off, right here on the HAMB. Go get yourself a forged axle and keep everyone safe.

Cheap price speaks volumes on quality and no [brand] name supports this suspicion. Your life or someone else's depends on this very important decision. At least you know the more well known brands would have R&D to back up their product and be conscious of liability issues should the product fail. Never skip on brakes, suspension or steering!

Thanks, quickchangeV8. That's the kind of fact-based input I was looking for. No "cheap" axle in my future. I'm not surprised by the negative opinions.

    Thanks, everyone.

Sad thing is if "they" are reading this they will just jack up the price and give the illusion of quality based on price. Bob
