Hi there guys, just wondering if anyone could reccomend a cheap airbag setup, or a list of stuff i would need to build a pretty fast airbag setup for a 64 belair/impala. I would like a pretty quick setup, i know i will never be able to match the speed of hydraulics going up but hopfully have it Drop as fast. thanks! Jason
Look in the cl***ifieds there is a cheap setup over there right now. If you want to spoing it like the ghetto cruisers do its going to cost you, that shock wave stuff is real pricey. But if all you want to do is drop it to park and raise it to drive then you can do that with a regular set of bags. Another cheap alternative is to get the bags off a late 80s to early 90s Lincoln.
I would really love to drop the *** end to drag some spark blocks and have enough control to not wipe out and be able to raise back up.
You can do that with air but its not going to be instant. It will take considerable suspension setup of you're going to control it while your draggin' ***. If you have no air in the bags you have no suspension. You'll have to go the normal lowering route and then replace your springs with the bags. Back in the old days when the Chinos were doing it with hydraulics it still wasn't instant. They would lower it to the right place to make contact with their drag blocks and drive it that way, then raise it when the "MAN" showed up. Lift gate cylinders and aircraft pumps did the trick back then and up was a lot faster than down.
puttin bags on a 64 impala is like having a big pimple on a models ***.. it just dont belong... HYDRAULICS ALL THE WAY!!!!!!
Hey speedracer, its Jason Here from Radir, i talked to you yesterday, i would love to run real juice but im hoping to drive the car atleast 2 days a week to work here, and i do a 58 mile ride each way!, i would be ******* blood by the time i got into the shop in the morning!, plus the wife wants to cruise too. maybe i will just skip trying for tricks with a bag setup and just get somthing that will dump fast,. thanks, Jason
you could run a 50 gal. compressor tank, and the bags, with a few valves- one to fill the bags and one to let the air out. also put in a gauge and a regulator so you dont blow them up. fill it up at the gas stations every once in a while. you should be able to get a few up and downs out of it before the tank runs out. just carry one of those 12 volt lighter compressors just in case. thats the EL CHEAPO way
Just use a half inch set up and contact suicidedoors.com for brackets...and parts for that matter. They're decent price wise and make nice parts as well. I learned to not do it the cheap way a long time ago. There's nothing cool about a truck that can drag the rockers dropping to the earth unexpectidly while going 75 mph on a packed freeway. Gets the heart going a bit!
Gotta agree with dvlscoupe on this one Cheap and fast don"t go together when it comes to bags. You can have a fast set up with 1/2i.d line and 1/2" valves. Or if you want to run juice Run a two pumps three dump set up with 2 to 3 batteries. Run ac***ulators on the cylinders and a medium weight spring and you would be ok. Not as good a ride as air, but you"d be juiced
ha ha ha ha i just figured it was you so i had to give ya some ****.... if ya want fast use 1/2" valves and line.... i got a buddy with bags on his truck that are just as fast as my hydros and he has 1/2" valves and lines and runs 230psi or nitrogen... but you could always run ac***uliators on your hydraulics and they ride nice then.... little more expensive but hell of alot nicer ride....
hey man i checked with my guys i get all my bags from.... a 3/4 inch line set up he said would be as fast as you would ever want.... everything you would need to do the job compressor lines bags 8 fast valves big chrome tank fittings and all would be about 1600 shipped... thats my cost on it all...
Have fun bumpin' your head on the roof. 3/4 is a nice size. Also think about getting a nitrogen tank to go along with that compressor. Nitrogen makes for some fun!
I am running 3/8 line and valves and its pretty quick. I am running a 175 pressure switch with 2600 lb bags. I have ***anium drag blocks on the back and have no problem dropping quickly and draggin. Some people will say you have to run 1/2 but that is just too quick in my opinion. There is no adjustabilty with bags that fast, your either up or down. That might sound cool but its hard to find the sweet spot when freeway driving. As for quickness i can lift mine in less than a second and drop just as quick. Keep in mind this is on my 58 buick that weighs 4300 pounds. As for your topic ***le cheap and fast those two dont go hand in hand.
yeah cheap and fast dont go together with bags... im sure i could do a whole 3/8s set up for 1000 or less...
Heres the set up I run on this car........ (1) Viair 450 100% duty cycle compressor (1) Square D Adjustable pressure switch (1) 5 gallon, 10 port tank (4) con***ech 1/2" ported bags. (8) 3/8" mac 380 valves (2) dual needle Viair ****og gauges 3/8" lines and all nickle plated fittings Front and rear mounts. Shock relocators (4) shocks (1) 10 switch switchbox
