UPS won't ship motors....and if they did you couldn't afford it.

Engines..,Yeah, would just go truck freight. I am forgetting that I get CAT rates through UPS, I never really stop to think just how high shipping rates have gotten.

Local Fastenal just called me....my flathead/trans and subframe arrived this morning....going to pick it up after work today. Bought a model A banger last night and will be shipping it the same way next week from Amarillo.

This if good to know. I sell a lot of small stuff, but shy away from the heavy stuff because the shipping is a deal breaker.

The places I've found usually want twice a much as the selling price of what I'm trying to ship.

same here....take the Model A motor for example....bought it for 400 and would probably cost another 200 to ship it to me using truck freight. Also....they would charge me extra to bring it from the nearest truck freight terminal in Houston. Fastenal has locations almost everywhere in Texas....not sure about other states. But so far every other state I have checked has had multiple locations nearby to the parts seller.

That's awesome. Sounds like Greyhound's shipping plan but on a heavier scale; it goes on the next bus that has space for freight. It's a smart plan to help offset their fuel costs, etc. Dead space on a truck is a bad deal for company's running freight.

What is their size/weight limit? If they can ship an engine, I'm guessing they may be able to handle smal machinery and equipment such as a small lathe or sheet metal brake, etc? Maybe a cubed pallet of body sheetmetal?

I was going to ask them if they could ship a frame....but haven't yet. I would think they could do machinery if the locations can lift it with the forklift they have available. I would think larger stuff might take longer to since they would have to wait until there was more room on the truck.

I just asked about a frame and machinery....waiting for his reply. He has told me that larger items may take longer because the trucks that handle the area I'm inquiring about come out of Dallas/Ft. Worth and they are almost always full. They would have to wait until there was enough room on a truck going the right direction. So if you weren't in a hurry its still a good deal. pretty much anything you can get on a standard 4x4 pallet is a sure thing as long as its not stacked to tall. He said they would consider any shipment....just has to be on a case by case basis. Depends on where and what size/weight.
Update....just heard back....frames are not a problem to ship...machinery is ok also as long as its not too tall. I asked about a 2000# Bridgeport milling machine and he said no problem. A lathe might be iffy though....it would work ok hauling it...but might be a problem for the forklift to load/unload. Depends on how big of a lathe.

Did you get your quote through the 3pl logistics site? Or call your local branch and deal with them? I've got a seat for Dad's '53 f100 that needs to get from Atlanta to Houston and this seems like it may be the best deal...

Submit it thru the website and then the logistics manager from your area will send you a quote. Then you can email him directly after that.

no problem....from what they are telling me it would be quicker if I was shipping stuff from my location to the north. Then the trucks could pick up on thier way back to Dallas when they are mostly empty. The way it is now they are full coming south so sometimes there will be delays until there is space on the truck. We will see how the next one goes. Its coming from west texas.
