  1. I am considering a set of Hurst cheater slicks for my 38 Chevy coupe build. While I certainly relize they are not all season tired by any stretch of the imagination We do get some rain back here. If I was to get caught out in the rain would I be taking my life in my hands, or would I be ok if I take it easy? I know their are alot of people on this board that run them. Thanks, Todd

  2. Ive got them on my bucket and yes they are a bit sketchy in heavy rain, mine are the firestone dragsters with 2 groves in them but they do stuff all to disperse the water, never had a crash yet though fingers crossed!!. Guess if you drive sensibly it shouldn't be to much of an issue.

If the driver is good should not be a problem

  5. Funny you ask, I've thought about it a few times myself although I'm more worried about tearing up my car :D

  6. Tug, if the pavement is wet pull over. Don't drive on wet pavement with slicks.

I'm more worried about a car on slicks looping it into my families car or any car with my kids in it, or anyone else for that matter.

I should have taken pictures of my old truck,
got caught in a downpour that was like the sky opened up
hydroplaned, spun out and got T boned by a big box van
my daughter and I were lucky to get out of it with minor inguries
    truck was totaled.
weather man said there was a chance of rain,
I thought I'd just take it easy.
    yeah right.

Yes, you will die, or kill someone else, maybe a whole family.

You can't "take it easy" , and it would not matter if you were Mario Andretti as far as driving skill goes.

One minute you would be driving along, in seconds you will be doing 360's into never never land.

Slicks or drag radials etc etc and rain of any amount are a big no no.

  15. I have Cheaters on 2 cars and have driven both in the rain at high speed. No problems as long as you aren't an idiot.

If it's raining, pull over and have a cigar.

  17. Do a search on spools and lockers and see who can drive as well.

back in the EARLY 90's(closer to the 80's now that i think back on it) my dad had a Pro Street daily driver elco with a 454 and MT 33/21.50's,,,,that could get hairy at times,,but it was his daily driver....so he adjusted to it...

YUP = you will die! I had 18 inch Micky Thompsons on one of my rods .Got caught in freak heavy rain storm on the interstate highway slowed down to 45 mph but still took a complete spin out of control ,scared the shit out of me and a BMW driver ,got lucky and didn't hit anything. White knuckle drivin that thing in the rain after that. Never again !

  20. Those are not cheater slicks and they are slippery on dry pavement. you will die is strong statement all though it sounds like you went for a ride........and didn't die

I agree with ALL THE BAD, They will KILL YOU or SOMEONE ELSE !!! I spun, first one way360 then the other way, several times on I-5 ,north of Portland, Ore. Literally sh-t my pants, slid in to ditch with my Fad-T and sit there and made promises to God, I will NEVER be able to keep..

This is a very disappointing thread. Wheres the guy that drove I-80 at 95 mph in downpour then headed off up a twisty road in the rain and his rod handled like a Ferrari and he had cheater slicks on the front as well!

  23. This bothers me, I have to go outa my way to spin my cheaters in the rain.

  26. Everything will be just fine for a while and then one day when you least expect it you will touch the brakes same as always and you will be spinning with zero control, just like driving on ice. Might not even be raining, could just be a damp road on a foggy morning.

Are we talking about drag radials or true slicks? I've driven with both in the rain and I will never ever do it again. I had a pair of MT drag radials on a truck got caught in the rain. I kept spinning the tires until I found a safe speed about 15-20 mph. Got too confident and started to speed up due to the parade of traffic behind me. I lost traction and did a 360 into oncoming traffic. Missed a few cars and spun into the berm on the opposite shoulder. I can only imagine what it would be like on true slicks. All it takes is to hit a bump, lose contact with the road and you are at the mercy of the gods. Why? for what reason? Because its cool to run slicks on a road car? Our hobby gets a bad rap as it is because of some peoples total disregard to safety. I say if you are the only one on the road, go for it. Drive as fast as you possible can. Just remember to pay your health insurance premium. As a taxpayer I don't want to be on the hook for your medical bills. This question is obviously from someone who has never lost a loved one in a car accident . . .

I took off on a damp road going to a car show. May a right turn, after a dead stop, I could feel the back end coming loose, so I went home instead. Not worth the risk.

The intended purpose of these tires are? Traction at the drag strip. Under perfect conditions.
