Cheater Slicks on the street- Hurst? Coker? Towel City? Cops?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Section 8, Jan 31, 2008.

  1. I too have the Hurst cheaters, with the grinded whitewall. I posted that I wanted to grint the tire so the whitewall was all the way to the rim, to match my front tires. Cody saw this and responded, and spoke to me personally on the phone about it. He said don't grind them any more. He also said to heat them well for traction. TSo far, they have worked great for rolling the car in and out of the driveway for the last year during the build; don't show any wear yet.;)

I've been running slicks for about 8 years, putting at least 3000 miles a summer on them. Even though my car is good for at least 4 tickets standing still, I've never had any trouble with the law concerning the slicks. As far as brand loyalty, I've had 2 pair of the new "re-capped" slicks. They dry rotted, separated, and rode lousy. They were so out of balance, I wasted my rear axle bearings coming back from Indy one year, and that was with a half a wheel of weights in each side. I don't know about you, but I have too much time and $ in my car to risk tires flying apart or shaking my car apart on long runs.I switched to Radirs and could not be happier. As far as bad weather goes, it's just a common sense thing. You have to drive like you have bald tires, because you do. For racing, they are, in my opinion, a harder compound that a modern race slick, so if you're looking to race for every tenth, use modern slicks. But for looks and regular road use, I can't say enough about the Radirs.

My last foray into driving cheaters on the street(Cokers),got me followed for a long time by the OHP one day but no ticket.
No balance issues.Had to set up the clutch to slip to hook 'em up at 5500 at the track.(lower R's bogged the motor)
Driving on the highway in the wet was my worst nightmare.
Car spun out on a bridge transition, semis going by would blow the rear of the car sideways.
I know ,I know, why were the semis passing you?Because driving faster was not an option.
Wound up buying a set of used wheels and tires and putting them on the back and stuffing the slicks in the passengers seat to get home without the risk of death or dismemberment.LOL
Moral of the story, don't even try it in the rain on the highway.

I am the guy that now owns Tmans tub and the slicks seem to have pretty good road manners (although I am in the proccess of swapping them out). Had them in the wet once and was surprised how well they behaved, but they are slick tires so not an optimum situation. These are the Hurst recaps. They are capped on 235/15 radial casings.

The thread got off to a bit of a rough start, but this is all great "real-life" info -- Please keep it coming.

(Notice I didn't mention what they're going on, I didn't want to completely de-rail the discussion)

Are there any Alliance Vendors selling the Radir Slicks?
I'm digging those racing flags and that they're non-retreads

Glad you liked it. I got it from an off-duty cop at a Waffle House one morning. He was kinda giving me the idea that if he was on duty at the time, I'd have a glove box full of tickets, or hanging on a hook when he was done with me. That said, if youy DO meet that old cop that happens to be having a bad day, there's no way to explain your way out of the whole "slicks on the street" thing. I've just been lucky.
As far as the "what brand" question, I'd rather not turn this thread into a stone throwing pissing match. I'll just leave it at, "I love my Radirs".

I also live in AZ and have been running M/T ET Streets for about 4 years and have never had an issue with the police. And we never have to worry about the rain. Go for it. Those Hurst cheaters do look bad ass.

    I gotta do something.

I had my car inspected, got a VIN assigned and got it registered yesterday.

Now, I'm actually (sort of) legal.

I'm a little more confident now, with license plates and all, but it's kind of frightening to drive, there is no rear traction at all, even with the Currie locking rear, anytime you nail it under about 35 mph, both tires light up and it's like driving on ice.

Cool and impressive, yes. But kind of scary too.
It's my first hot rod, I've always had big cruisers before.

I guess it's a good problem to have to get used to.

I'm leaning toward the 10.0- 15 Coker Firestones ones.

  17. Put some weight back there! My daily Ford Ranger will bust loose if I so much as run over a spitball w/o weight in the back. You can make it look tastefull as well. A couple nice old toolboxes painted up and secured filled with concrete?

Coker Will give you one hell of a deal with the alliance members discount on my wheels and tires (tiny 5:20-15s up front and massive Cheater slicks in the rear) I saved around $100 or more just by saying my hamb name haha deffiently worth the $50 to join. I have yet to drive the truck with them on but cokers slicks are really nice compaired to some others I have bought.

Well, I guess it's time to show what they're going on:

    Attached Files:

  22. I run Hurst two groove cheaters on the back of my 37 Chevy pickup. I haven't been stopped or harassed by the cops but I do have fenders so they aren't all that eazy to see. I've driven in the wet a few times and just say that steering with the throttle is lots O fun. The full on rain would be sketchy, I think they would be all over the pace in more then a drizzle. Love'em otherwise they do nice straight launches when they're warm. Have fun. Jaysin

P.S. those new Hurst look killer on your car Hotrodtodd.

I've been thinkin' about why so many here seem not to have issues in the rain like I have had.
The only thing I can think of, is it must be I run a spool.

I don't think that has much to do with it... I have a spool in my 10 second Chevy II, and with 30x13.5 ET streets I have driven it in the rain MANY times. Bad enough rain that "normal cars" were spinning out, and by being cautious and careful I had no trouble at all keeping it on the road.

Without a doubt, the no wipers and no defrost thing makes driving in the rain more difficult than the tires do. (the '55 also has no inner fenders and no hood, so the front tires fling all of that water onto the windshield...)

I guess another possibility, is in Southern OK, you probably don't drive on snow and ice 5 months out of the year either, so it might just be an experience issue...

Read the post let me help you "Had any problems with Johnny Law not appreciating your "bald" tires. Not "had any problems with Johnny Law not appreciating your not Dot approved tires". :confused:Ever seen a pair of ET Streets pretty "bald".
Hey Section 8 I saw your ride @ the pavillons ths weekend. I am going Saturday I might see you up there. Dont get pulled over with those cheaters....lol

    Don't be an ass newb.....

Mearly stating that....IF one gets pulled over with ET Streets, that there is a DOT rating on the tire you can point to to say they are legal, where on "some" cheater slicks there isn't, and the cop can ticket ya, no matter how many grooves the "cheater" has.....

My main question was based on avoiding being pulled over and whether you ever got as far as having to show a cop/judge your DOT stamp.

I'm going to cut out that page of the Coker catalog and keep it with my registration so, if necessary, I can say "Write it up if you want, officer, but it will be dismissed"
