We used to take all the club cars and put them on a rack once a year (great reason to get together), with everyone going over the car while in the air. Different eyes see different things, and it found a lot of stuff that needed immediate attention.

The brake pedal pad use to vibrate and back itself off and fall into the floor a lot on my '53 3/4 ton. It was scary the first time, but I figured out real quick how to grab it off the floor and screw it back on. Use to fall off randomly and annoy the **** out of me for about a year or so until I finally got tired of it enough that I put a backing nut on the stud to hold it on more securely. Hasn't come off since.

Paul, I think your aunt jinxed me on this one: I left the steering wheel nut loose too for a bit while i was working on a project that was useful to pull the wheel off until the steering wheel popped up and off the shaft too once going down the highway. Now that was a scary one. Good thing my truck runs straight and I had a good grip on the wheel with both hands at the time as I was able to push it back down and then pull the horn ****on off to tighten the nut back down. Only let that happen once before I tightened it back down. Wasn't going to let that one happen again. Almost literally had to check my sh*t on that one.

Had a tie rod come loose on my 56 bug one time @ 50mph. Talk about a hairy *** ride! Cotter pin and nut both gone! Thankfully I got stopped before something stopped me!

I check all my stuff every spring on the rack at the shop before hitting the road, after a blown brake line in my 56 Chevy left me screaming downhill towards a red light with no pedal and the e-brake handle pulled out to my ear lobe...Jeezus. Can you say Dual Master Cylinder or do you want to bet your life on a 55 year old fruit jar? Single point of failure doesn't work for me any more, no matter how cool it is...

Every 1000 miles down the road everything gets checked. It doesn't take long on a rainy day to get under your ride and at least look .Safety is where it's at. Then have fun.

Drove a restored Model A coupe around for two years and one day I stopped at a light on a hill. Some A-hole pulls right up to my rear bumper, so when the light changed I leaned forward and pulled slightly on the steering wheel as I let out the clutch, so as not to roll back into aforementioned A-hole. Steering wheel came off in my hand - no nut! I drove through the intersection with the steering wheel in my hand:eek:....

That is why our club holds a N.S.R.A. inspection in the spring. Another set of eyes looking over our rides.

  17. Glad it ended up the way it did, Larry. That coulda ****ed.

My car just has a loose nut behind the steering wheel.

I was asked to drive a bride and groom to their wedding. Early that day I took a "Shakedown Cruise" and the clutch pedal dropped to the floor. Luckily I was close to home and even luckier there was no traffic at the local intersections. I had lost the clevis pin on my clutch linkage.

I had a spare, so I made it to the wedding, but all I could think about was what could've happened if I didn't drive the car that morning.

Took my new (at the time) blazer to the dealership to have the road hazard ****on fixed. Left the dealership and got on the freeway. Noticed the seat had been slid back. Reached down to move the seat ahead and the f'n steering wheel came off in my hand. I got it all lined up and turned around. Talk about checkin your sh*t. Check your shorts. I had to pull a fake sheepskin seat cover out of my *** before I could go into the dealership. The nut was on the mechanics tool box. We all had a few nervous chuckles.
