I would love to hear @squirrels take on the world famous Flathead! [emoji111]️ I respect the both the Flathead and the SBC. But I respect most engines, and I understand that they both are icons. Despite that I like flatheads and I would love to run one in a no hood roadster, and in at fat fender car, I could run a OHV V8 without feeling shame of any kind. I like the Y-block as much as the Rocket or the Nailhead or... There is a reason people keeps saying that 98 pro cent of all SBC came out of a Corvette's, and 70 pro cent of all 40 coupes owners pony up for the HotRod edition with the über cool SBC. [emoji13] Don't get hung up on the mill, as long the body is solid! But a good running flathead is a bonus. Any update squirrel?
The 24 Hours of LeMons , In an Edsel , Cant't wait to watch along with Squirrel on this on . O wait , It's only the LeMon Rally! Still should be as entertaining as Drag Week!! https://www.24hoursoflemons.com/rally
53 54 Bel-Air's, 210's and 150's came with Corvette front suspension. Or is it Corvette came with Bel-Air, 210, 150 front suspension ?
I have owned six flatheads, 59AB, 8BA and 8RT. All of them were good engines. I sold one 59AB to a guy for $500, guaranteeing it was rebuildable and not cracked. He was happy with his purchase. I have also had a '59 Edsel Ranger 4 dr sedan. I liked it too, but Mrs Arkie did not, so I sold it. I really have nothing to add to this thread but couldn't keep my mouth shut.
I certainly wasn't bashing. I absolutely love my flathead. But squirrel, besides being very knowledgeable based on all his helpful posts, also seems to be very much into horsepower. A flathead seemed to be a but outside the expected. But that's moot, because he got a much more normal Edsel
It was probably a good idea to not use a flatty powered car for a 24 hr roundyround race in the desert.... I know you have enough talent and ingenuity to do it, but my guess is, it would become a money pit. Some guys over here are racing flatties and have 15-20k Euros in them , and they keep braking them over and over again. I really admire their dedication. All of them are complaining about the poor quality of available parts, and still they keep buying them...for this kind of money I´d rather start my next project and use a Nailhead, early Chevy, Ford Y, Rocket that lasts... I close friend has 7 k Euros in his rebuild and it still runs like ****. He got all the "best"parts from the big name flatty shops, and he is a quality engineer at the Mercedes Benz plant in Stuttgart, so he kinds knows what he is doing... I can let him chime in what he thinks about flatties, but this wouldn´t turn out nice, hahahahaha It ´s not about bashing these cool little engines, but after all I have seen ´till now it´s just not my goal to own one.
The rally thing I'm going on is not the normal 24 hrs of LeMons race. It's a leisurely drive through the desert in August, over several days. On public highways. I'm going with the at***ude of making it a real challenge, so the flatty would be really appropriate. But the Y block I got will be sufficiently fun for me, I think.
Flattie's aren't for everyone but I have a Model A with a SBC and it don't get the looks my flattie does (although I have put 25,000 trouble free miles on it)
