Hello All Ive read several of the rust threads here, and theyve left me a bit confused, but I would like specific recommendations for my situation plz Im looking into cleaning the rust off of my Sedan here http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h...30/PICT0138.jpg As you can see its Rusty. Top and sides deep surface rust; rockers also have rust with deep pits and some holes My question what do you recommend to chemically remove the rust leaving clean metal, and that will also kill the rust and keep it from returning Ive seen several products, But not really sure which to use in this situation for such a rusty project if you need more info plz ask and i will provide thank you all for your time and attention Cyric
sorry i don't have any info for you but i am interested in this also for my 53 bel-air. so to the top with it and i hope someone has some great ideas for this
honestly, unless you want to spend the cash to have it dipped, or professionally blasted, get alot of bags of #20 sand, a blaster and and get ready to get dirty. I dont know of any products like POR that would work to the extent your hoping for. The chemical dips are expensive, but effective, (if theres enough good metal left to have it looking like a car after coming out of the tank. Sandblasting yourself, not so spendy, dirty, and time consuming, but its part of your cars resurection...Good luck
Take a look at the post I did some time ago about rust removal using electrolysis... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10461 Go out on the web and search for other articles on this topic. When I was researching the topic for myself I found many articles where guys had built large tanks, one was large enough to place a frame from a motor home into. With some 2x12 planks and some plastic sheeting you could treat that sedan body in sections and have it clean in a weekend. Good luck...
I haven't fooled around with electrolysis. But I want to look into it. Other than that I'd suggest you have it blasted by someone that really knows what there're doing. There are several types of hard media that will take off all the rust. If you use sand use 70 grit or finer. I've seen too many dipped cars go bad. Blasting runs around 700.00 ( In my area )Well worth the expense. Your going to get people telling you about all kinds of magic rust converters that you can "paint right over"... Nothing but band aids IMHO
This product called Fertan really works. No shit. It turns rust into a black powder. It doesn't cover over or encapuslate it. Gets rid of rust. I first used about 20 years ago on my '36 frame. Tex smith did an article on in Street Rodder of Rod Action way back when. Here's the web site: http://www.fertanamerica.com/
