NealinCA, if your ID is correct, mine are '38s. There is another variety of wide-5 hubcap with the same V8 logo as these, but a much larger stainless center, leaving a painted ring around the outside that is only 1"+ wide. I had thought that they were '38s, and that the smaller ones were '39s. The big ones are very rust-prone, and I have found almost none that are useable. I thought the ones you identify as '39s were aftermarket (well, I have some of that design that I know are aftermarket, but they may just have knocked Ford off). I do have a picture of the wheel, but it's on my computer at home. I'll post one later today.

[/ QUOTE ] The "bell-shaped" ones are 38 Deluxe. I just looked up in a Early Ford V8 club book on 38/39 Fords. They show the hubcaps like yours as 38 Std and the ones with the smaller, bulkier V8 as 39 std. I do agree that you see an awful lot of the aftermarket, chrome hubcaps in the 39 std style. Neal
There is a great shot of Chet's car in the new Rodders Journal. It is in an article for a best of Rod and Custom book they are doing. Say is was in the june '55 R & C and was then owned by Lonnie Askin with a flathead in place of the 6.
4eva4, please pardon this digression. NealinCA, thanks for clarifying the '38/'39 distinction. Here's a picture of a stock width (16x5) 3/4 ton wheel with the '38 cap. Although they're hard to see, there are five (oops, not 4) slots:
[ QUOTE ] Amazing how the cap appears to be a different color, huh? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, what is up with that? I take it you made a change. I do like those wheels. Do many people notice the lack of scallops? Thanks for the pics. Neal
Just funnin'. Yeah, I decided to repaint the black part of the caps in maroon, and shot the pictures so I could compare them side-by-side. I haven't yet repainted all the caps as I haven't finished taking out the dings. No, hardly anybody notices, but I like them much better than the passenger car wheels. They are rare! I looked for them for more than a year, finally running an ad in the Early V-8 Times, and had the amazing good luck to find a set of 4 NOS in PA!
