Technical Chev hot start/hi-torq mini/Ford sol?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by CG, Aug 12, 2014.

  1. I dunno why but I never checked the age of the battery. It was old, instead of having it tested I just got a new one, would have needed it no matter what. So far I have had zero problems starting and driving around town. Actually seems to be cranking faster and starting quicker than ever before. Maybe all this work I've been putzing around with is going to give me a reliably charging and starting car with over all excellent wiring ... maybe lol.

Now I just need to figure out what that irritating miss is (always something).

have you thought about raping the header to help control some of the heat . quality header wrap works good.

  3. Yeah its defiantly on my list of things to do if the problem comes back, and a heat shield on the starter.

Seems like this would be a problem for every single SBC running long tube headers ... some never seem to have problems though.

But I think mine was several problems that all needed to be addressed.

Glad you have it fixed with minimal work, thats the best way to do it! Batteries are funny like this, I work on a fleet of 150 school buses each using 2 or 3 batteries each. We load test them all the time looking for weak or dead cells. They can be working fine one day and be dead the next, and some like yours die a slow death.

  6. Are big relays traditional? :D HAMB relays used to be traditional. ;)

I used to park on a hill all the time when I was young (is 50 still young?) I have an after market mini and I like it other then it sounds like MOPAR starter, I never liked the sound of a MOPAR starter. I also have a stock late model GM mini that I have never used yet, its an induction (permanent magnet?) starter.

I have used the Ford solenoid a lot over the years, never on a mini starter. I have never really noticed a heat soak issue with a mini and I would just wire it up and go with it if it were mine, if it developed a problem I would worry about the problem when it happened. Sometimes we spend a lot of time trying to fix something that isn't broken.

    That's very true sometimes.

Most of the time around here I see guys fixing the wrong thing that's broken. It's sorta the same, one is correcting imaginary problem and the other is knowing there is something wrong but incorrectly imagining where it is. Wish I could help more but there's only so much a fella can do.

  8. I got an old racin' buddy that says if it ain't broke fix it 'til it is. ;)

Sometimes I try to help, other times I look and say well I can't screw this up any more then it already is, but I try anyway just because. :D
