I have a Chevrolet 235 that I plan on putting in my 1946 Chevrolet truck. I am trying to figure out if I figured the casting numbers out correctly? casting number cylinder head 3836848 block 3769716 date codes cylinder head G72 block G72 Vin next to the distributor F07107 If I'm right this engine was built July 7, 1962? I'm just trying to figure out if its a car or a truck engine?
Hi, look again at that number that's stamped by the distributor. My guess is that the character at the end, which you listed as 7, is really a letter. That letter will tell you what it is. If you can take a good picture of it and post it, then we can all look at at it and someone who is more familiar with what the stampings look like, might be able to figure out what it really is. You are right about the casting dates being July 7, 1962. But the assembly date is in the stamped number, which is 07 10, which is July 10th. Which is what we would expect, it takes a few days or more to get the parts from the foundry, through the machining and assembly process. here is the listing for trucks. and here is the listing for cars
Are you replacing a 216 or did the early 235 come out at that time, one of the differences between the early and late 235's and the 216 is the placement of the water pump, the later pump is about 3" lower in the block that the early 235 and 216, I was fighting this issue this last week untill I read about an adapter plate to use the early pump in a late motor.
