I put 216 parts on my 57 235 and over the weekend found some of the factory PCV parts and would like to convert my 235 to a PCV system, the replacement for the road draft tube with the PCV system does not have a provision for a oil cap so time to find a valve cover with a oil cap. I am thinking the cap was put on the valve covers around 49 so does anyone know if there is a 216 valve cover that does not have those vents or time to just seal them up.

the last few years had a PCV. Cover looks like this
Could possibly add the non vent style cap and seal the vents on the old style?
The fancy aluminum ones don’t have the vents

  3. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe 216’s had the center bolt valve covers. The one in my 1950 3100 does. My 216 also has the oil fill cap on the front of the valve cover.

  4. The ones I have do. 3 small vents and and a vented oil fill.
The later ones I have with a PCV just have a non vented oil fill

I am trying to avoid the later valve cover as I like the look of the older versions.

  6. Same here. I plan to use the PCV parts from the later cover.
Probably weld up the small vents and use the later oil fill cap.

    That’s a 235 Rocker cover..

  8. Yep. The last few years with a PCV. And no vents or vented cap
So I guess you can eliminate the vents in a 216 cover if using a PCV

This photo borrowed from Jim Carters web page shows what a 51/53 216 valve cover looks like. I don't remember a 216 valve cover with Chevy script. 216-engine-1.jpg

Jeff, you need to find a side crankcase breather with a 3/8” pipe fitting near the top or punch a grommet hole in the top for a hose for 1/2“ tubing to feed a PVC valve under a carb. The extension off the side crankcase breather would also need to be removed and covered. A breather then is put on the top of the rocker cover. I’ll try to show the one I did on a GMC with a similar 2 stud rocker cover. The tubing you see on the upper edge of the side plate leads to the center carb where a V100 PVC valve is attached under the center carb on his engine. It works perfect. The original crankcase side breather has baffles to only vapor goes to the intake. You can also see the vented breather on the rocker cover to feed the system. IMG_2721.jpeg

I picked up the PCV breather at a swapmeet and that is what started this project for the new engine that will go in soon,I plan on welding on the tube from the original road draft tube so it will look original but not functional as original. I have this 235 looking like a 216 even with the 216 side cover.

I shot a few photos today of what I made for my sons 302 GMC we were at a show together. You can see the 1/2” tube leading to the PCV valve, the rubber hose goes around the back of the head. The valve is screwed into a 90 behind the center carb.

I am going to have a carb spacer made so I can screw the PCV under the carb,I am using a Rochester B carb.
