So i have 1956 Chevy 235 hydraulic lifters in my 39 Chevy. When cars parked running motors sounds good once I take her out the motor starts loud ticking noise. I've narrowed it down to the #6 the plug has carbon build up. Noise goes away after cars been sitting but again after driving her comes back. Stuck lifter? Bad lifter? Replace those two? Or just add some seafoam?
Point of clarification - is it a '56 235" engine or '56 hydraulic lifters on a '39 Chev mechanical lifter cam? First is always change the oil and filter. Second is report the readings of a known good mechanical oil pressure gauge. Your description is too vague to suggest a fix. jack vines
235s are famous for hydraulic lifter issues. I've known guys who eventually gave up and switched to a mechanical lifter camshaft.
Might be a bad lifter. Those pushrods are known to bend/flex with high revs...one or more could be compromised. Check for a broken valve spring also.
Pulled nber six plug wire and the idle didn't change. So I pulled both lifters one was really tight I couldn't push it down the other I could push down. If I'm correct that means it's bad. So I did order new lifter. I shouldn't be able to push that lifter down correct?
Just sold my hydraulic lifters '56 235 with 120k miles. No lifter issues. High teens fuel mileage on the highway mostly cruising 70-75 on eight hour 450 mile trips. I adjusted the lash twice in the 22 years the engine was in my '49 half ton.
