Hot Rods Chevy 283 --What trans should I use??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Nos1partstore, Oct 30, 2017.

  1. Thank you***L. From what I have heard a 319 OD only weighs 90 lbs. I like to keep things light on a low HP build.
Anyone know what a Chevy Posi-traction weighs vs. a 9" or 8" Ford rear end?

Power isn't really relevant. It's just math... weight, gearing, power curve, and****orted other bits of data (more complex ones like drag coefficient and such). In porknbeaner's S-10 example, it was bad math on GM's part. I had one too, and the problem was well known at the time... we had at least one complaint (probably more) for every S-10 that left our dealership. Transmission spent all its time hunting between 1:1 and OD at "highway speed." It could have been fixed with a slight ring and pinion change, but that would have cost money. So GM blew it off.

yeah, it's just math. And a more powerful engine will reduce the need to "get it right".

The guys that suggested a stick shift should be given lots of thought. A 283 and a stick are a lot of fun. I have an overdrive automatic in my A and I never use 4th gear. I have lots of deer in my neighborhood and the roads are kinda rough so I'm happy driving 55-65 all the time and the 4th gear lugs my engine unless I am going 70 or more.
