Hi Gang, I am in the middle of a cam change in my 292. Previously I searched this forum for cam info and found that I could use a 250 cam if I did not use a mechanical fuel pump. 250 performance cams are readily available and I purchased one. (Comp Cams 244 mild) Installed it and found that the engine would not rotate. My guess is the fuel pump cam lobe is striking the crank (or vice versa). My question is, have any of you fine gentlemen actually done this installation or only passing on second hand info? My concern is, are there any other surprises I can expect? For example; Are there any other interferences? Will the additional lift (approx .095" at the valve) clear the piston? I am sure that someone has already done this and has first hand experience. I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Rog
I am thinking that you bought a used cam? Comp Cams makes cams for your engine. Most major cam grinders do. I had a 292 way back when I used a crane fireball in mine it was pretty straight forward. I wish I could help you more. Now someone else will chime in.
292 cams are different from other I6 Chevy cams I believe they are even relieved along the shaft itself to clear the rods
Yep, i believe I just read that in The Chevrolet Inline Six power manual If you don't have it get one of these. http://www.amazon.com/Chevrolet-Inl...=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1320962864&sr=1-4 He answers a lot of questions and clears up a lot of hearsay items.
