Yes I have searched and searched but cannot come up with the numbers listed on this engine anywhere, I find the 1st 3 but the rest just dont match up? Any one got any help for me? the engine in is in my brothers 48 Chevy, MarkKoch here on the Hamb, that he just picked up, I know for sure that its a 235 or larger full pressure as the valve cover has the 4 bolts rather than the 2 in the center so it isnt the original , just trying to figure out what it actually is here are he numbers thanks for any assistance! 3836848 gm28
My 29-54 Chevrolet Parts book shows 383----numbers in 49-52 and 370----numbers in 53-54 but not the number you show. FOund my 29-59 Book, it doesn't show that casting number either.
that's the head casting number (based on the fact that it ends with 848 which is very common), mid-late 50s 235, if you want more info he'll hve to get the numbers off the block. stamped by the base of the distributor, and cast near the starter, and near the front of the block down low.
3836848 is a 1956 235 head. http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/chevytalk/GMhistory/1916-57cast.html As Squirrel stated, this only means the head is a '56, not necessarily the engine. I have been told a 3836848 head was often used as a 'replacement' for an earlier engine that needed the head replaced. I run a '53 235 block (3701946) with the 3836848 head.
