292 Chevy 6 made a noise on the highway the other night at 75 mph. I let out of the gas and it went away. Drove 20 miles home no issues. When I shut down it made a bit of noise again. The next day I started the car and it rattled and I shut it off. No metal on dipstick. Tonight I had to move it out of the driveway, started right up, made noise like banging pots and pans, with some gas it went away, backed it out of the driveway to get another car out and the noise didn't return. Putting it back in driveway an hour later, no noise, got out, popped the hood to look around. Nothing seemed out of sorts, gave it some gas and it came back! Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
If it is an automatic slide under it with a 9/16 wrench and the proper stuff to pull the flywheel cover off and check the torque converter bolts and eyeball the flex plate real close for cracks before you do anything else. Check the bellhousing bolts too while you are under there. If it rattles when it is idling out of gear but quiets down in gear with a slight load on it, there is a good chance that is where your issues are. Stick, check the bellhousing bolts. Simple things first and then look for the hard stuff.
The flexplate may actually be cracked or bolts coming loose at the crankshaft flange.......common problem on 292 trucks with manual trans......might be happening to your flexplate also
