Years ago, I picked up a ****rel 327 long block out of who knows what. On it, there sits a neat little balancer with a single pulley integral to it. I like it 'cause it's very compact length wise. So, I looked to see if I could find a duplicate on DamperDudes. The only dampers I saw with the integral pulley were all listed for sixes! So, the question is, do these six cylinder dampers fit on V8's? If they fit, do they work? I'm not contemplating any high revving, high HP monster engine here- just a sedate cruising hot rod. Thanks so much from an FNG!
the 283 and 327 were used in alot of applications other then cars and trucks, combines were one use also some ramblers. this could be where it came from? and why you can't find it in auto parts. run the engine #'s it might help. hope that helps
Pretty sure they fit ok BUT the timing marks most likely won't be right. Use a piston stop to find true TDC then mark the balancer.
i doubt that a balancer from a 235 261 etc will not work. When i was out of a fan for my 350 and i needed one that was 16" diameter or less. I tried a fan from a 235 and the bolt pattern was different also I tried a early 283 fan it was the same pattern as the 235. I dont fully know if it will work but my guess would be it would not work.
ther was NEVER a small block chevy factory installed in a rambler. there were 327's in ramblers BUT they were NOT chevies... btw, i've never seen a sbc balancer with the pulley built in to it. sure you don't have a 6cyl balancer?
The 230/250 Chevy 6 damper will not work because the length of the collar that goes on the crank snout is shorter so the collar will not be seated on the timing gear which is in effect the stop. This however is beneficial to the people running the 230/250 Chevy engine. We would machine the collar down on a Chevy V8 damper and run it on the 6 banger. This was when good aftermarket dampers were becoming readily available and there were no Chevy 6 units available. However, if a 350 damper is considerably more than one for a Chevy 6 face that collar off!!!
the earliest 265 and 283 dampers had the pulley riveted on to the damper. Restorers will pay a premium for them.
55 Dude asked for a picture and I think I got it here. I started pulling it off and got distracted a while ago. It sits a lot closer to the engine than is shown here. The pulley measures 7" OD.
The early 265/283 engines had a pulley riveted to a "hub"; not really a balancer/dampener per say. In your photo, one can clearly see the torsional ring part of an elastomer dampener. However, I have NEVER seen a pulley riveted to an actual SBC dampener; they've ALWAYS been bolted on. Could this engine have come from a truck? Post the block casting numbers and the numbers from the pad in front of the p***enger side head; maybe someone can decipher them. Someone else already posted about the possibility of it coming from an industrial/commercial/farming application. Now, some of the six cylinder guys USED to use modified SBC dampeners on their inline engines, this was before the aftermarket began producing them for racing purposes. Butch/56sedandelivery.
The engine is a ****REL- Block is mid sixties 327. (A friend with a '66 Vette was interested in the block which is more correct than the block in his car.) The deck has been resurfaced- no numbers on the pad. Heads are correct for a '56 Vette with dual quads. I have no idea what the engine was in last time it ran. I was mainly wondering if I could pickup a six cylinder balancer and somehow duplicate this balancer. I'm working on two similar projects that both need SHORT balancer/pulleys. Thanks!
