I have a 1929 chevy with the original brakes in the front end and now I'd like to swap brakes. I would like to keep the original spindles and steeringassembly, so what kits can I buy and from where?
Instead of thinking "kit", think "junkyard"....or what we used to be able to get at the junkyard. A 40s truck axle with 50s truck brakes would be good.
I have a 1928 chevy and the same question. 1) why exactly do I have to switch to the 1940 axle?, I cant use the 1928 axle? ( I will probably want to drop my stock axle in the future, but if I need to be using a newer axle to use newer brakes, clearly there is no point in having it dropped ) Thanks!
The early spindles and backing plate mounting bolts are kind of small compared to the later stuff, it makes it easier to just swap the whole assembly. but you could try to just swap the brakes if you want to, it should be doable.
There is a guy on here, I believe his name is believe it not (28 chevy). He switched out the front on his 28 chevy to disc brakes using the original axle.
The Filling Station has the brackets to convert the original spindles to disc brakes. www.fillingstation.com part number FS-715. Junk yard would probably be cheaper though.
