Chevy engine I.D. help sought

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tiny, Jul 25, 2004.

  1. I just picked a 283 for my next project, the Dodge touring car. Its a front mount with offset bolt valve covers. Based on the number on the back of the block D127 I believe it to be a 57. What do the numbers on the front of the block F5I5GC tell about this old hunk O iron.
    Thanks for your help

    Fudgie,
My book didnt list the GC prefix for anything in 1957. The D127 on the back of the block and lack of side motor mounts denotes a April 12, 1957 casting date though. Casting numbers will only give you the date of the casting run, not the actual application. Call or visit the GM dealer and if you ask nicely, he might be able to help you out. -Gunar

I have a book that lists all the codes up to about 1990. "Chevrolet Small Block V8 ID Guide" ....It is published by MBI and sold by Cl***ic Motorbooks.

My book lists the "GC" as a 265 that came with a OD transmission.

Yep the offset valve cover bolts lead me to believe it's a 265.IF it hasn't been messed with.
