Does anyone know what baclancers have the timing marks at what locations? I currently have one on my 350 with the mark at 12 or 1 at TDC and cannot see it to time as the short water pump does not allow me to look down on it. I want to change it to the one that has the mark at about 2 o'clock so I can match the pointer and balancer together to time this SOB. Anyone?
There are 2 or 3 OEM locations and several timing tabs and many of them are wrong anyhow by several degrees even if used right...do this the easy and cheap way!! Buy a speedshop tab that goes where you want it to be, or make one by cutting up and shifting the scale from a tab; get or make the cheap little tool that screws into the #1 spark plug hole and allows you to to find TDC by the interference method, a job that will take you 5 minutes. Now, mark your newly found exactly correct TDC right by zero on your new tab. Done! Do the finding process twice using magic marker for the marks til the repi***ion telss you it is correct...now make a permanent punch mark filled with paint, marked so you recognize it and are not confused by factory groove.
look for one from the early-mid 70s, should have it off to the right like you need. The top mounted pointer started in the late 70s or early 80s, iirc
Get one for the earlier engine and you will either find a 6 inch or an 8 inch i think the 6 is a little over 6. you can buy the timing tabs for either. I used 8 inch balancers on my crate 350's and i got a used 305 for my new roadtser project with a 6 or ist it 6 3/4 balancer. I had a problem with a short pump too and i found one of the timing tabs left over from the crate motors for the smaller balancer so i bolted it on and rolled it to top dead center on the old mark then remarked the balancer and painted the mark silver.. Works great Dave
