Did they change bell housings between 47and 48, or was the change in 49?

I6 bellhousing changed in 62/63 when they went to the new engine (194 in the chevy II in 62, 230 in the big cars and trucks in 63). From then on all the straight 6 engines had the same bellhousing as the V8s.

  6. Thanx guys !!

Inquiring minds want to know, are you trying to mate a SBC to your old driveline, or are you trying to put a later trans behind your 216?

There are some options for the latter.

  8. K6,

Im aware of all the trans swap options stateside (ie:T5/S10) just looking at ways to mate local 5 speeds to the I6.

Seems like about 10 years ago or so, an inline guy from OZ did a write-up in the 12 Port News about making a flat aluminum adapter plate to put a Toyota RWD 5 speed (said they were common down there) behind an early Chevy 6. Even included a drawing w/ measurements, etc.

Twisted6 had the stash of Inline back issues for a while there; he might know what I'm describing.

    Hope this helps, Kinky6

That'd be me, and I still have the original sketches I did for the article.

Frank already runs a Toyota Supra 5 speed in his 32 3W behind a flathead, so is aware of that type of gearbox, even if it is different to the ones I wrote about.

I know that there are is guy in Sydney NSW who has a program to cut the required shape into an adapter plate that would allow a supra 5 speed to go behind and original 216 Bellhousing.

Might be an avenue to look at - ring Dellow Automotive in Sydney - I asked them about cutting a supra pattern into a scattershield, and they said "no Probs"

I am converting a 1935 Chevy pickup to electric and am looking for the bellhousing bolt pattern. Is that what you are referring to? If you still have the sketches, how might I get a frosty cold reward to you in exchange for it?

51 at least and later big Chevy trucks had the later trans pattern on the back of the bellhousing. I've got one out of a 51 1-1/2 ton out in the shed. They shouldn't be hard to find even in Oz.

The bellhousing used with the 4-speed was the one with the V8 pattern. I had a 50 Chev PU with a 4-speed (granny first gear), pulled the six out and bolted a 283 up to the transmission using the stock 283 bellhousing.
