I have a 1962 Chevy II 4) cylinder, 153 cu. in. engine and I need a carburetor to fit this engine. I am NOT a purist so the carb does NOT have to be OEM. I just need a carb that will bolt up and it must have a choke. What's out there that will work? What ya got? Please let me know. Thanks Bill
I assume that this is the original 1bbl carb. If I was you, I would try to find a salvage Mercruiser Chev II with a 2bbl Rochester 2gc (?) carb. This is a great carb, very versatile, will add a little HP, parts and tuning easily available. You would need to swap the intake manifold as well. If not doable, I would still transplant a 2gc with an adapter plate. May be some other more current carb swap info out there as others may input, but I'm just going with the old tried and true stuff that I have dealt with. There might also be a Weber conversion out there also like I have on my Willy Jeep.Good luck.....have fun
These engines, and the 6cyl both used a Rochester Single barrel Carb so finding one shouldn't be too hard. New/rebuilt ones are available...but pricey. 1 Barrel Universal Carburetor N228 (carburetor-parts.com)
Carter YF was also used on them. Make sure you get the right size base, whichever one you find. Some of them have a slightly different bolt spacing
They had a funny top which held a crossbar for the stud that held on the air cleaner. I believe any GM 6 from 63 thru the early 70’s will work as Squirrel said watch the bolt spacing. All these had pretty much the same compression so the jetting will be real close. I’ve seen Chinese replacements for under $100 but who knows if they worth-a-shit.
As Squirrel mentioned, the Carter YF was also used, more specifics: A/T Carter YF 3128s superseded by 4372s S/T Carter YF 3379s superseded by 4373s All four have manual chokes. All were designed specifically for the 153 CID. Should be an absolute bolt-on swap with possible exception of fuel line placement. Carter made many different YF's to replace Rochester B's on Chevy sixes. For reviews, check the Chevy "Stovebolt" forums. Still a few B's running, but most have been replaced. Performance does not suffer, fuel economy and reliability MUCH better. The books say there was a marine version with a tiny Rochester 2-barrel (would require an intake manifold change), but even here on the Lake of the Ozarks, I have never seen one. This also would be a good replacement, but more trouble with the manifold change. Have never figured out why Rochester made such wonderful 2 and 4 barrel carbs, but the single barrels were on the other end of the scale. Jon.
Jimmy - the offshore YF replacements make good paperweights if clean, doorstops if dirty. And I HAVE seen them. Jon.
I have used both Carter YF and the Rochester Monojets….While the Monojet is better than the older Rochester B,I believe the YF when jetted correctly was the better carb.
