I'm looking at using the Speedway straight axle kit for my 64 Chevy II but have a few questions before I make my purchase. 1) What width axle should I use? 2) Chevy or Ford spindles ? And why? Thanks, Mark
Your going to bend a steel one you need to find a chrome moly axle. Then figure out what kind of brakes you want to run. That will determine what spindles you need Tom
Speedway offers Wildwood brake kits with spindles for either 49-54 Chevy or 37-41 Ford spindles, so, that doesn't really answer the question. I'd like to know what's the strongest of the two (or if there is a stronger third option) myself.
It says on speedway that the chevy spindles are stronger and you can use the chevelle brakes which are a little bit bigger. I don't really see the difference, I've seen heavy '55s with big blocks run the Ford spindles. I know this really doesn't answer your question but maybe it will help you decide which path you want to go.
When I ask that question I was told it depended on if you wanted to run tierod ends(ford) or heim ends(chevy).I am in the middle of building a 65 Barracuda with a 46" Chevy axle and 9 1/4" rotors and then modifed the steering arms for tie rods a choice I made after ordering the axle. As far as the width 46" might be a good choice on your Chevy II because the cars are close to the same size. When I stared the build I emailed speedway on what I was building and they where very helpful and then I asked any and everyone for information to help me with my build. Sorry I can't help with results because I am still working on it but I hope that I was some help.
