So, I've got the 261 in my 51 GMC running pretty good, but I've determined that the carb is the smaller 235 carb - Rochester B. I've rebuilt it and it seems to do OK, but could probably be better. I thought about getting a re-manufactured carb, but I can't find one for the 261. The one's I've found say they are for the 235 and 261 - I assume this is the smaller 235 carb. I know there might be better carbs but I've got the linkage and bellcrank all set up for my foot feed and TV cable for the 200 4r. Changing now would mean starting over on that and right now I'm not up for it. My question is... How much difference would the correct carb make? Should I spend the $ on the re-man carb or hold out for a 261?
Measure the port on the intake and match to your carb.If they are the same you have the right size Rochester.
the 216 throttle bore is 1 1/2" the 235 throttle bore is 1 9/16". the 261 throttle bore is 1 11/16". No harm in running the 235 carb on a 261.
Thanks guys. The manifold is bigger so I assume it's the stock 261 Manifold. I think I'll just run this one for a while and see how it does.
Canadian Pontiac's used the 261 as a base engine in the 50's early 60, so they should be plentiful up here.
A Rochester B carb from a '63-'67 292 would have the larger throttle plate as well, if you run across one of them.
Hold out for the 261 , amazing how well they run on a 261. Find out the part number and start looking. Its worth your time...........
