Any hints on installing a Chevy 350 oil pan? The engine is in the car of course. I'm using a Slam Guard oil pan with a Fel-Pro 1 piece gasket. The directions say dry, no sealant. I can't get the gasket to stay in place until I get the oil pan up there. I could put a dab of RTV at the corners but I can't see that it would hold the gasket, gasket is relatively heavy. Will the RTV hold the gasket?

    Thanks,

    Bill

  2. Use several spots of RTV or gasket shelac to hold it in place. Let it set for a bit.

  3. What they mean is, the gasket will work without selant, but putting selant on a gasket never made one leak. I cement the gasket to the pan with coppercoat, let it set up then it'll stay in place until you get the bolts in.

Didnt the gasket come with some doohickey snappy deals to hold it in place till you get a few bolts started ? Mine did.

Thread some sewing thread thru a couple of holes in the gasket and pan. Thread in the bolts thru the empty holes, cut the threads out after the bolts are started to hold the gasket in place. Thread the remaining bolts, tighten to spec.

Whenever I need to get a gasket to not move, that doesn't require sealant, I use 3m spray adhesive. Spray it on the clean pan, let it tack up, then set the gasket on and let it dry. And no this is not some backwoods joke, I'm a auto tech and do gaskets and such for a living, it works.

I still put a dab of rtv where the curved parts meet the flat parts.

As Jabber sez, 3M spray glue works great, especially for cork. Copper spray tack. Also have some real 'sticky' fuel grease that works good too for holding things in place. Highly recommend dab o goo on the curvy parts too

Not to state the obvious... but undoin the motor mounts and jacking up on crank pulley an inch or so with a block a wood helps sometimes

The way GM used was to have threaded studs in the corner holes on the block. You could use more and replace them with bolts after you get the pan in place.

Same here.. i'm a mechanic or tech or whatever they call em now day's :), and whenever i have to do this sort of thing, i use 3M 'trim stick' to hold the gasket in place..
I also use a touch of RTV in the corners too.
    Works every time..
Also, the one piece gasket that was mentioned is great, expecially when installing overhead.
