Have a 62 fleetside with a fresh mild 350 looking to change the trans was told a s10 5 speed is the best thing to look at. Well let me hear it boys what year should I look for. What is involved is it a streight bolt on and make a trans mount?

I think in a vehicle that heavy, the S-10 trans wouldn't hold up.

yeah, they don't hold up in s-10's very well...I have lost 3 5-speeds and a 4-speed in dd's with 2.5's and 2.8's...not beating on them either...what will happen is it will start "kicking" it back out of gear..so skip that gear and take off in 2nd, right...after a few hundred miles of that, it will kick out of high gear or come to a grinding halt like you're power braking it....plus, unless it's free...they go for too much money...just my .02...good luck with you're project!

  4. s10 nv3500 rated to 350lbs / ft.. somewhat deep (for a truck) 1st gear. i was planning on putting one behind a 350 in a jag with 2 somthin gears in the back.. put the final drive ratio in 1st at about 10:1 iirc. with the right rear gears its a great trans.. too deep of a rear the 1st gear will be almost unusable... and the c/k nv3500 has a 6:1 or so first.. not the greatest for a car.. that is unless ya wanna pull stumps...

88-up 2wd fullsize has a decent 5 speed, and a 62 is already setup for hydraulic release, right?

I am in the middle or reading a tech article in one on the latest magazines on the shelf about swapping the S-1- shift tower to a Camaro 5 speed to have a stronger box and shifter where you need it. That should give you a 5 speed that will stand up a lot better.
The S-10 boxes work behind flatheads and other smaller displacement and torque engines pretty well but as others said they probably won't handle the torque of a 350 for long.
