  1. If you have two SBC oil pans and the REAR seal areas are different, I believe you may have two completely different pans that are not interchangeable. The difference lies in the rear MAIN seal configuration of the engine itself. I am not positive on the year (either 86 or 87), the SBC changed the REAR MAIN seal from a 2-piece to a 1-piece and you must have the correct oil pan for the year of engine.

    As for the front OIL PAN seal on a 4-piece oil pan gasket set (going of off memory here) ... put the oil pan on the block without gaskets. If you can fit a feeler gauge (without bending) between the oil pan and the timing cover, you need the thick FRONT gasket. If the feeler won't fit, you need the thin gasket.
