I am currently routing the exhaust pipes on my 1939 Ford - with a 327 Chevy small block and spin off filter adapted oil filter vs OEM canister. I need a short filter - the exhaust runs under this filter. On my Small block Ford engines - I run a spin off OEM Motorcraft filter that is 1/2 the thickness of factory FL1-A.

Any ideals on a thin small block chevy filter? 1.5 to 2 inches shorter would really help.

What is the part number of the filter you have now? (there are different kinds of adapters, and different length filters, you know)

I will need to look for the box - It is a NAPA number - I bought the spin off filter adaptor from NAPA. This is the only Chevy engine I have. Usually a Ford engine guy.

A remote filter adaptor. You can mount it anywhere.
They even have them for dual filters. Takes a standard Ford type.

I agree with you on OEM. back in the day - my first car was a 1972 Ford LTD - 2 door with a 400 Cleveland (2-V) V-8 . With Napa oil filters - lifters got noisey at 1,000 miles. With Motor craft FL1-A and Ford Motorcraft oil - quiet lifters. Still have the car parked in the woods with 165,000 miles - never been in this engine. Have not tried to start it in 10 years ......

Here is a project I started but haven't finished yet, but it may be helpful to you anyway; a list of common spin-on oil filters for SBC. I think choosing a filter only by height is maybe not the wisest way to do it, but the filters on this list are all the same diameter, with the same thread size/pitch and the same gasket size. They differ in brand, height, filter media type and filter efficiency. I think the Purolator PBL15313 is probably the shortest filter on the list, at just 3.09".

    Hope this helps

The reason I asked what number is on it now, is that the spin on filter adapter I bought in 1979 and ran for a few decades, uses a Ford filter (the one with the smaller center gasket, like an FL-1A)

If you bought the adapter recently, it probably takes a Chevy filter. There are what, 4 different lengths? available. If we knew which one you have on it now, and how much more room you need...

If the adapter uses a Chevy filter, ph30 is the short one from Fram.. Cross that to a Napa, Wix, or AC.

A picture in my mind depicts an exhaust pipe running partially 'through' the existing filter. If a shorter one is 2" shorter, that pipe is running directly under the filter. Is this part of the planned outcome?
OEM is always my preferred method, but Czuch suggested a remote. That would be my recommendation, also.
My former '34 five window had an exhaust/steering box closeness. Rather than warm the box and leak the lubricant, I relocated the exhaust.
Oil filters relocate easier than Muffler Moly....

which spin-on adaptor is on the SBC?
There is two versions commonly available.
One uses SBC filters 13/16"? and the other uses Ford/Chrysler filter 3/4"?.
So, you might able to use the same filter on your SBC as your SBF.

If your adapter takes a Ford filter, You use the short Toyota filter or a Volvo filter.

I have one of the remote adaptors. I actually got it in a junk yard and couldn't live without it.
The former owner mounted it threads down. Lesson learned, can down-threads up.

Ditto on the remote, sounds like you'll dump oil on your headers with every filter change.
