Ok my son has a 1934 truck with a small block Chevy. He just installed a new starter and ignition switch. The engine starts turning over when we turn the key to the first position, accessory.
The truck will start but the starter stays engaged.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  2. You have the starter wire on the wrong pole of the switch. If your poles in the ignition switch are batt, st, ig, acc, the starter wire should be on the "st" pole.

Sounds like you ran the wire from the solenoid to the wrong terminal on the ignition switch. Use a test light as you move the key, to confirm when each terminal on the ignition switch gets power.

  4. Wired wrong.
The solenoid wire should be wired to the tab corolated with the start position, it should be marked S.

Accessories whould be key to the left.

    Damn you guys type fast

We have the solenoid wire going to the starter pole. Accessory wire going to the accessory pole. Distributor wire going to the ignition pole. The positive wire to the batt pole.

  9. Now don't start!!!!!

  10. The switch might be no good out of the box.
Use a test light and see if the start tab gets voltage in run position ( first click to the right )
Remove all the wires except the hot from battery

Have you done any other wiring ?
Like switching wires at the coil?

If harness is color coded it will be the purple wire to st pole on starter.

How many small post's on the starter solenoid? With a HEI dist you should have your starter wire connected to the terminal closest to the engine block. no connection on the other. Remove the starter solenoid wire turn on your ignition switch there should not be voltage on the wire nor should the starter engage. If the starter engages you have a solenoid / starter problem.

No sense buying more parts till you test what is wrong.

Do what was said about disconnecting the S terminal wire on the solenoid, and then testing that wire for power on each position of the key switch.

  18. Do what you want , but you need to verify it being internally fucked up before you change it.
    This is a simple test.

Dirt t gave you the next step - or you could begin at the starter .
That's also easy if you can get to that wire. Its in a stupid spot.

It's a brand new torque master starter. One small post one large post.
As soon as we are done with dinner we will test the solenoid.

  20. If it's one of those cheap Dorman brand parts store switches it's probably bad. I bought one for an engine test stand that did the exact same thing. Took it back and got another one. Didn't have the problem any more.

  21. This is 2012 - new parts doesn't mean good parts.
It didn't mean that in 1965 either but today is very different way different.

It was a bad key ignition switch. 2 new ones Second switch is the good one.
    Thanks for the input.

If any of you have auto glass questions like what does a DW123 fit or what is the part number for my 57 Chrysler we can sure answer those questions. We are auto glass guys, not electrical guys. Thanks again.
